For those who are curious: the lingering potion aplies the desired effect based on what block the entity is currently standing, this means that for the slow falling effect to be aplied, the player must be in a block that is in range to the potion splash, and being in a block is probably not a good thing in this scenario

Okay so there's two reasons this works the way it does:

The height of the hitbox for lingering potions is smaller than the AoE height of a splash potion.

Slow falling does not *prevent* you from taking fall damage, it only slows you down to a point at which you no longer will be damaged, but it takes time to decelerate you.

The added height of the splash potion effect means a longer fall distance, means more time for the slowing effect to take place, means no fall damage.

short analysis on this (the lingering potion part):
i played this video on 0.25 playback speed and when the player died, the slow falling effect was not applied still.
the player wasn't even hitting the ground when he died, when he touched the ground, slow falling effect was applied.

probably bad analysis but it should be a proper explanation on why it did not work
