Great Crested Grebe Chicks Take a Ride | British Birding

Learn how Great Crested Grebe chicks take a ride on their parents as they grow up in this video I made about Great Crested Grebes in my home town. Great Crested Grebe, Podiceps cristatus, was endangered through hunting for their beautiful feathers in the late 1800s and early 1900s but since hunting was banned they have benefitted from a proliferation of new habitat in gravel pits and reservoirs. Great Crested Grebes are one of the most elegant of water birds and have become a familiar sight in many parts of the UK. Seeing grebe chicks riding on the backs of their parents is one of the most endearing sights in British birding.

Grebes are super mom, I have got a chance to observe little grebe during breeding season and really surprised with their care and dedication as a parent.

Great vid m8, very informative. For some reason I don’t see them as often as I did in the RSPB Reserve here in Newport but there are multiple pairs on the local reservoir. As you say one of our most elegant, beautiful water birds!
