Why World of Tanks has never been in a worse state...

The quality of World of Tanks endgame experience has been on the downtrend for quite some time now. What are the main problems with dumbing the game down and how could this all be turned around?

World of Tanks (WoT) is a massively multiplayer online game developed by the company Wargaming, featuring mid-20th century (1930s–1960s) era combat vehicles. It is built upon a freemium business model where the game is free-to-play, but participants also have the option of paying a fee for use of "premium" features. The focus is on player vs. player gameplay with each player controlling an armored vehicle.

Basically, they need to change maps, and delete or at least reduce the corridor and hull down maps. Create some new open field maps where you can actually flank and relocate easily. This would be great for everyone and it will also change the meta

It feels like the gap between the weak and meta tanks has never been bigger and the whole game needs a massive rebalancing. Also the spread of maps needs to indulge more playstyles.

WG is so far disconnected from the player base it's incredible that the game continues to survive. The continuing "dumbing down" of the game is ironically killing it IMO.

2 or 3 lane corridor maps are killing the game. It feels so restrictive when you play anything but a heavy tank. Lights and mediums are so much harder to play because you only have 2 or 3 open maps and rest are just meant for heavies to fight over one corner

I just want they remove +2 MM and replace with +1 MM and balance the game instead of keep throwing superb OP prem tonks to the game :)

Matchmaking has been broken since day 1. I'm so sick of the majority of the games being 1 sided, 4 minute 15-3 blowouts. Tier 10 is almost unplayable these days because of this. Even winning isn't fun like that.

Well put. I would add that all tiers are suffering. Trying to grind credits in tier 8 prem playing 5 games and facing a tier 9 and 4 tier 10 matches. Trying to use standard ammo as much as possible and getting clobbered by tier 10s spamming gold rounds. For the average player, having the credit system nerfed is a struggle at times.
This meta of hull down tanks is getting old too. One of the reasons for keeping arty around was supposed to be to prevent people from camping, but what do hull down tanks do other than camp a ridgeline? I think what WG are missing is that the more they make the game easier for newer players, the more they nerf the fun and excitement of the game. Honestly, I get so fed up sometimes I just rage quit, get chat banned and boycott the game for a few weeks. It's pretty sad that I get more enjoyment from doing the dishes than I do from playing this game.

Agree with pretty much everything you have to say. I believe maps is a key aspect to fixing a lot of the game's issues. The map themselves really are the deciding factor on how the game is really played. And Wargaming's design philosophy when it comes to maps is pretty flawed. Would love to see some more map discussion from the community!

However, I disagree with you on the new outline feature. I don't think it's "dumbing down" the game, it's just providing you with more information. To me, this feature is similar to the extended map features, the hit log and hit-indicator, and the team health bars: More power and information to the player!
For me, the game has never been consistent in which structures and geometry you can actually destroy, shoot through, or are solid etc. So yeah, you have to learn the specific properties on each individual structure on every single map. Of course, I agree that it does reward experienced players and will feel satisfying to be able to outplay your opponents thanks to your knowledge in this regard. But are you outplaying these players because of a well implemented game mechanic, or a poorly implemented game mechanic? I think most structures in the game are poorly communicating what is actually destructible or not, so you just have to find out by trial and error. So to me, the new outlining feature is a perfect way to communicate just what is destructible or not, and I think this is something that should have been in the game since the beginning. World of Tanks is already a very complex game and I don't believe implementing such a feature is "dumbing down" the game, it just helps us understand the game better!

Anyways, great video though!

I'd love to see more different game modes being implemented into the game. 7vs7 was the most fun i ever had in this game, and i would love to play the old capture the flag or domination game mode. Just something different than randoms. No game can stay in a healthy state if there's just one way to play it. The same goes for the hull down meta

With the exception of making consumables reusable, every change they've made has made the game worse. I don't think WG has the desire or the ability to save this game.

Imagine Wargaming bringing out patches every 2 weeks like League. Meta tanks would receive some nerfs and underpowered tanks would get some buffs. Meta would be changing constantly.

What about a credit and/or bond boost for tanks with worse community performance averages? OP reward tanks should be given deferential match making so the best they get is +1 MM. And a rework to ammo types so there are damage, accuracy, and pen tradeoffs.

I agree with most of what you said and I am a long time player (almost 90k games) and 60 tier Xs.
1-I quit the game right after EBRs were added because they destroyed light tank and aggressive medium play.
2-I just recently came back (less than 2 weeks ago) and the new hull down heavy meta is boring.
3-Tier X is nothing but EBRs, gold spamming and sitting in the back for the first 2 minutes because you get punished if you try anything (like getting forward in fast mediums for quick spots and early damage).
I think I have played exactly 2 tier X heavy games since I came back and am endlessly frustrated trying to play my lights and fast mediums. Tier X is supposed to be the crown jewel, but I have much more fun at tiers 5-8 these days...

imagine having maps as big as in war thunder, with like still 15 people on it, in a game mode resembling steel hunter in terms of spotting mechanics to force people to move around and look everywhere to find the ennemy. this could allow flanking and also provide new and potentially fun gameplay for everyone to learn

From what I've seen, a lot of the "improvements" are just previously banned mods to begin with. I don't know if they just think it's easier to give everyone the mod instead of trying to combat it or if they really can't stop the banned mods to begin with but either way it has and always will make the game easier.

I really respect people that make content for this game. But I also can't help and feel sorry for them. I've been with this game since the Beta. And while it has seen a large number of improvements it is also obviously clear that Wargamming will not change their principles here. They will do everything they can to increase their profits. And as long as that works, the gameplay, meta and everything else will either remain the same or get worse. So anyone that's hopeing there will be some kind of "change" here, well I think that's naive.
Play the game if you feel it's fun. But don't expect that it will change.

Just another idea; I was thinking that it would be so useful to have something like a shooting range that you can try and feel any tank with any combination of skills/equipments freely. It is so painful to grind a tank just to see it is not your taste.

I actually quite liked the new tank silhouettes being added, it adds a lot to the quality of life.

I personally think it would already be a great start if wargamming started adding substancial weakspots to the turret armour of their newly added tanks.

I believe some time ago, in some interview, someone from WG said that they didn't even expect the game to last this long. If this was really the case, I think WG knows their game is dying and is currently just trying to squeeze out as much money as they can while they can. It's a super pessimistic view I know but it just feels like it.

I've always thought there should be a special page in-game where players can choose to watch videos from all educational community contributors. Wg is clearly not capable or does not want to make a viable tutorial themselves, then why not promote the people who promote your game in return by recommending their videos as tutorials. This is a win/ win for both sides, wg will not have to spend resources making tutorials, at the same time people who make good content will receive a bigger following and motivation to continue promoting the game.
As for the skill floor thing, that's probably the most frustrating aspect for unicums and better players in general, cause they tend to strive for perfection and if a lower level player can achieve that perfection easier with help from penetration indicators etc. it kills the competitive vibe over time. That said players who are good and have played for years have easier access to many little tweaks like bond equipment, already grinded field mods, very good crews, etc. which also makes it unfair to newer people fighting against them. I cannot offer a reasonable solution about this though, it is possible if you redesign the game from scratch, but that means pretty much creating a new game which is never going to happen for financial and marketing reasons
