Kasimov is a old town in Ryazan region of Russia, located in the centre of the East European Plain, some 165 km from the provincial capital of Ryazan.. The town sits on the left bank of the Oka River that flows into the Volga at Nizhny Novgorod.
Kasimov was founded in 1152 as Gorodets Meshchersky and was actually located somewhat lower along the Oka river from modern day Kasimov. At the behest of Prince Yuri Dolgoruky, Gorodets Meshchetsky was turned into a border fortress for the Vladimir-Suzdal principality . In 1376, the settlement was completely burnt and ruined as a result of the Mongol-Tatar raid. and was subsequently rebuilt.
In 1452, Great Duke Vasily II of the Grand Duchy of Moscow gave thie settlement to the Kazan prince Qasim Khan, who served as tribute inspector of the Great Horde, but then came into Russian service. By other accounts, Qasim and his brother Yosif fled from Kazan after losing their bid for the throne against their brother Mäxmüd.
After 1471, the settlement was known as Qasím city. It remained the capital of Qasim Khanate until 1681 when the khanate was re-absorbed into Russia by Ivan the Terrible...
In 1773, Kasimov became a county town . By the first half of the 19th century, the town began to develop industries and by the end of the century was a fairly large commercial and industrial town....
