Innuendos and joke aside, is actually make sense something arrows penetrate the armor but get stuck without even touching the body so by putting wax it give them a little more smoothness and hitting the man inside the armor

Some longbow archers, myself included, feel the wax, gave a grip to stop arrow sliding off as resin can work as well

I found that out when I was a kid I put the tips of throwing darts into wax and then I found out that they would penetrate the target all the way to the base of the dart
