The Two Sides of Playa El Tunco, El Salvador

In 2015, as a ol'fart retiree, I rode my motorcycle solo from PEI Canada through isolated parts of Mexico to El Salvador and return to Canada. I stayed in this exact area for a week and this video really captures my feelings. The beauty and the ugliness, the happiness and sorrow. As with most places in Central America, the vast majority of people are exceptional - friendly, smart, funny.  My advice? Stay until you discover the funny - really, if the locals get you on a roll you'll hurt yourself laughing. I'd go back anytime - eyes opened, heart open, mind open - all the better to experience what's real. And, what's real is a gift.

El Salvador is beautiful and the people are super kind. Come to Australia and il show you the two sides also, except the poor in Australia are aggressive and depressed " not all but most" I would like to live in El Salvador

those "poor people" are far wealthier than any of us in america. they have an abundant wealth of what really matters. happiness, love, compassion, friendship and most of all peace! I'd rather live in a shack in el tunco than in the states! here I am allergic to dairy and gluten and a few other things. when I go to el Salvador I can eat anything so besides being poisoned in America, you're brainwashed to think poor is bad, and material things make you happy. in this aspect america is the developing country!

esa es nuestra realidad en el salvador. pero la reconocemos. y luchamos muy duro para superarla. en el continente americano. solo USA y CANADA son paises de primer nivel. los demás estamos jodidos aunque pretendamos lo contrario. pero los turistas tanto extranjeros como locales. dejan muy buenos aportes los negocios locales. por favor no dejen de visitarlos. diviertanse y ala ves contribullan con la economia local. The difference money makes is tremendous. Consider the fact that your single dollar in this country can buy you breakfast. Yet the people there may earn 10 dollars for an entire days work. The not so lucky may labor in the fields for 5 bucks a day. Its extreme disparity between the rich and poor. But the people are more family focused and happy nonetheless. Instead of having everything and still be unhappy.

Images of contrasting economic standings is ubiquitous in El Salvador. Obviously El Tunco is not the exception.
Perhaps on a positive note, the poor are not restricted to the area as other multimillion resorts tried to do. As long as it remains relatively a safe place to visit, poverty should not deter the surfers and tourists from visiting. It will actually help the country's economy.

The surfing world has brought opportunities to this part of El Salvador. There are 100’s of jobs that been created by this industry and hopefully will continue to bring more jobs for the poor. El Salvador is a poor country and yes is sad to see the extremes. But la Libertad has created a nice town to support the surfing 🏄🏼‍♀️ industry which help this entire area.
