Health Care in Portugal

In this chapter, Glenda and I discuss our experiences with health care and insurance in The Algarve. Both of us have had excellent treatment at reasonable costs. Far from being one of the Scary things about moving to Portugal, it is in fact a GREAT reason to move here. As always, thanks for watching!

Hi Guys, really enjoying your videos. The quality of healthcare in Portugal is good. As expats with more disposable income, it is a lot cheaper than here in the states. My oldest daughter lives and works in the Algarve and because she is on Portuguese wages copays etc. are very expensive to her. However, 4 years ago when visiting her I had fillings done for my youngest daughter with x-rays and all the treatments it still worked out (paying out of pocket with no insurance) cheaper than paying the copay for her dentist in Florida... I am a Brit and hubby is American and we will be doing 90/180 day stays when he retires in 2 years, and we will have most of our healthcare done in Portugal.

There is a channel, ”Simple Life Portugal” she was diagnosed with cancer in mid August and as of September 24th she still hasn’t received any cancer treatments. She is living a NIGHTMARE of pain.

Home made olive oil is at least 20 times better than the olive oil you buy in stores. A lot more benefit to your health and way tastier than the one you buy in stores even the golden virgin olive oil from the brand Gallo.

One question my wife and I have regards emergency care in the Western Algarve. (We live in Lisbon and are considering a move down there - Luz, Aljezur, etc. - in a few years). If you need an ambulance would it come from Lagos? Is there anything closer? It seems to us that the communities in that region are not well served in case of emergency.

I also got tramadol in Mexico. It’s not just a California thing. Is it prescription in Portugal or are you able to get it OTC like in Mexico?

Hi Glenn, we are Dutch and want to settle in Portugal. However I heard from a Portuguese friend of mine that you are rather on your own when it comes to medical care. He says most Portuguese people who need intensive treatment for a great part rely on the help of their families. Is that partly true, or would a very good, extra medical insurance cover this as good as in Holland, the UK or the USA?
