Founded with the name Dagon by the mon in the 11th century around the pre-existing Shwedagon pagoda, it was initially a small fishing village. During the campaign with which he reunified the country, King Alaungpaya in 1755 conquered Dagon, gave it the name Yangon and enlarged it. It was conquered by the British during the First Anglo-Burmese War (1824-1826), after which it was returned to the Burmese. A fire destroyed it in 1841.

This was filmed a year after my first visit to Burma in 1982. At that time you could only get a 7-day visa and were restricted to only visit government approved locations. I was lucky enough to visit Mandalay and Pagan on this short trip (but only through the official Tourist Burma agency). A beautiful country which imprinted itself on my mind every since, and I have revisited it four more times, but sadly the ongoing military regime means it's unlikely I will ever return.

1983 I was working in Southern Sudan working as UNV. That time I am 32 years old. Time pass very quickly. That Time Bankonk airport is smaller
than Rangoon airport.
Rangoon city is more beautiful but now it is totally different than Thailand. They developed.
I miss these old Rangoon city.
