Coronavirus pandemic: France looks to increase ICU capacity amid third wave surge

#France will not let #hospitals to be in a situation where they have to choose which patients to treat, amid a third wave of the #coronavirus pandemic, Health Minister Olivier Veran told parliament on Tuesday. "We will not let doctors be in a situation where they have to choose among patients," Veran said.

Increase ICU capacity? They will encounter the same problem the UK did when our government tried to increase ICU capacity a year ago by building the Nightingale hospitals. With enough cash you can build new ICU beds in a matter of weeks, what you cant do is build the specialist ICU nurses to staff them. That takes years and there is no shortcut. It takes 4 ICU nurses to staff just 1 ICU bed to provide round the clock care. So an additional 3000 ICU beds requires the training of an additional 12, 000 specialist ICU nurses. People with the necessary skills to do the job, are already doing the job. Medical students are next to useless. Being clever and being skilled are not the same thing. The retired are retired for a reason and for the most part, will stay retired ...and aside from the emergency field treatment of a gunshot wound, why would the army be of any use? Their skills are logistics and warfare, not bed baths and ventilators. It's a fantasy. Been there, done that. The bottleneck is skilled staff, not beds and machinery.

Either Mr Macron has failed to learn from the mistakes of others, or he is telling fibs.

You cant increase your ICU without sizeable increase of personel which can not be done overnight. That is why strain on the health system should be kept to minimum. -Why people should wear masks and keep social distance!
