Hey Chaps! Folding Laptops... Yay or Nay??

It's more like a folding tablet, because laptops already fold 😅

Edit: Wow, I can't believe how many people still comment on this three months on. I am thankful, guys, and I am a huge fan of The Tech Chap. Have fun, and I hope 2023 will be a great year for tech.

this should be the future of laptop/tablet design. It could either give you a small but very portable device (if they resolve the weight issue) or a big size screen that's manageable to walk around with. If this gets mass produced, the reduced price would make this VERY interesting. But foldable smartphones have been around for a while now, and still are ridiculously expensive and remain a niche product, so I don't see this happening within the next 5 years.

I love when companies innovate with their products. Definitely going to wait for gen 2/3, if they make some nice refinements I’ll be buying in the future.

The positive note, is that you have a foldable 17" inch screen portable to work home, work, public or in the field which allows flexibility to manage more efficiently. Though the pricing is hot expensive at this point but it's the prototype.. hopefully it will be affordable around £800 to £1200 with future models choices. Awesome one!

It's crazy too see a folding screen device, which is actually useful!
This setup is really promising, I'm curious how they refine it in upcoming years.

I think the most attractive part is you can fold it half into your backpack. So, a 8.5 inch laptop is no problem for it. If it is a 17 inch one, it might be hard to do. I like this idea. I think it is cool.

i would love to actually see this as a portable monitor. digital nomad life is increasingly popular and as someone in the creative industry benefiting from a larger monitor that folds up small would be AMAZING

They definitely got it right. It's basically the most flexible computer ever built and it's exactly what people want. We're getting closer to the floating screen, but even that might not replace this.

I am pretty interested in fold devices but it is taking a bit longer to get good feeling and performing fold devices than I thought it would. Honestly think AR/VR tech like glasses will be a better on the go option before foldable devices will. Especially considering the price tag foldable devices have.

What would be great in the future with this tech, is that it would allow you to bring monitors easily with you. E.g. a 24" monitor is about 30cm folded in half, which is about the same length as a 16 inch laptop. Imagine all the work space, all portable, in your bag/backpack.

I'd love to see a foldable laptop with an even bigger screen. Imagine a triple fold laptop with a 13 inch folded size, but a 29 inch ultrawide when unfolded. Would be amazing.

I really appreciate ASUS developing new types of products.

Weirdly enough I can see the "no styluses" thing to be a big downside - It otherwise would have been great for artists, you can use it like a normal laptop or all-in-one and then unfold it for drawing / painting. I hope future models fix that!

I like that it folds for smaller storage and you can use the keyboard separately. If you use it just as a screen, it makes sense.

Yeah.. This has a lot of potential. Actually, I think it's extraordinary. Probably I wouldn't yet buy it but in a year or two... who knows. I really like the idea of a folding screen and having it separate from the keyboard. And on top of that, the screen is touch-enabled, which is such a great help for people who use a stylus to write on it. For online classes/presentations it's just absolutely perfect. Especially if you write a lot of math :)

My personal problems with the device ordered from most significant to least:
1. Price
2. Performance
3. Screen Material/No Stylus support
4. Crease/Glare
5. Thickness
6. Thick Bezels
7. Keyboard charged separately

This makes so much sense. Companies need to make more tablets that have the same capabilities as gaming laptops. Definitely looking forward to the 2nd or 3rd generation

Looks great. I'd rather have this than a traditional laptop. If I was in the market for a new laptop and this was a comparible price I'd go for this.
I don't care about the plastic looking screen or the crease for some reason.
The only addition I would want would be a duel kickstand so it could also be stood up in portrait mode for working on certain documents where that is an advantage.

The OLED screen and screen size are suitable for content creators to showcase their works on the move. However, the software bundles and sub par hardware are really hard to justify the high price tag. Wait for the next gen.
