The main problem of development of geothermal resources in the country is the high initial exploration and production drilling cost of geothermal wells which private investors often shy away. Another problem is the high risk of drilling unproductive wells and the high cost of maintaining the productivity of the wells. The geothermal industry in the country has slowed down significantly when the government turned over the development of geothermal resources to the private sector with little incentive to private developers in terms of sharing the costs of the risks in geothermal development. It is high time that the government should engage in this endeavor of developing new geothermal resources in the country just like in the 1970's to 1980's.

With geothermal, you don't get a Chernobyl, a Fukushima, a 3 Mile Island type of disaster. No need to deal with deadly nuclear waste. The Philippines doesn't have the resources to deal with a nuclear disaster.

Combining it with desalination would be messy and expensive but if you get fresh water from the same project it might be worth it.
