I can only think of one other instance of a space craft being shot at random: the Nomai, in Outer Wilds, trying to find the Eye.

They succeeded because they had a time loop. Each time the vessel would fail, it would be called back to its launchpad, the angle would be changed, and it would fire again.

The Nation's way of finding other planets is barbaric, and so utterly hopeless. It is an error to even entertain the thought of the Penrose 512, or any Penrose for that matter, landing on a rock.

Well, given infinite time, it probably would hit something.


But they don't have infinite time.
