Hi Robin, I am enjoying your videos. One reason there are fewer Chartered Structural engineers is that, unlike the ICE, they have a very difficult formal examination to gain full membership. Some might consider that this makes it more prestigious, others may think it a barrier to a wider membership.

I am a chartered structural engineer with IStructE, I would add that structural engineering is a subset of civil engineering. ICE offers membership to all areas of specialisation of civil engineering. Environmental, water geotechnical, transportation and even some structural engineers are registered with ICE. So it is expected that ICE will have more members and income than IStructE.

Horses for courses. I know that on big building projects, it has mattered that I'm IStructE. I like the broader scope/area of topic of the ICE - but I definitely like the more structures-focused pov of IStructE. 'On the job' - I don't think it makes much difference. If you're going to be doing complex analysis, seismic, post-tensioned etc, you're going to have to skill up on that specific skill irrespective of the institution you're a member of...

2 very different institutions. I would recommend doing both as they test you in different ways. The ice is more general and broader with the istructe being a challenge of your design skills and can only be passed with several years of deep experience. Only those that have been successful with the istructe really know the capability needed to pass it.

I created an account to comment on this video.

VERY Poor analysis because:

IStructE annual reports on numbers + members are available on their website, with a breakdown of world wide members by region. - they're not dwindling at all. It took me 30 seconds to find.

There was no analysis of the chartership process for either institution or the areas they specifically cover.

No mention of the fact that many MANY people are a member of BOTH.

No mention of the cross compatibility of the chartership process i.e. that you can skip much of the chartership process for the ICE/IStructE if you're already a chartered member of the other.

No comparison of the actual resources on the websites, bookshops, library and so on, costs of membership or student + undergrad support; comparison of events, conferences etc.

Hey Sir, thanks for the information. I wonder if a fresh graduate BSc/Msc civil engineer can apply for a chartered membership in these institutions? or a couple of years of experience would be required? :)
