The Secret Weapon in MMA: Why Most People WILL NEVER Cut it in REAL FIGHT
Fighting is a highly intensive process, both physically and psychologically. In fact, MMA Fighters are often considered to be one of the fittest well conditioned athletes in combat sports.
Why is that the case?
Well the philosophy of many MMA fight teams is that when skills are equal fitness may be the deciding factor.
In fact, the saying in most MMA gyms is to “drag your opponent into deep water”. It’s an analogy to drowning. The exhausted fighter is a drowning person.
The idea is to attack and wear down your opponent both physically and psychologically.
Physically if your opponent is exhausted then they will find it very difficult to defend against your attacks.
However, the psychological aspect is much more profound. People often want to give up when they are exhausted. In this sense they lose the will to fight and this is where true fighters are born. Regardless of what style of martial art you practice your mind will often be the weakest link.
BREAK THEIR WILL TO FIGHT
And this is the ethos of MMA today, their secret weapon.
Exhaustion leads to a low level of alertness, hence with slower thinking comes slower reflexes and a reduced reaction time to attacks.
Combat stress induces exhaustion and fatigue very quickly, and these aspects will have a detrimental effect on your performance.
Now you may be thinking that this does not apply to you, since you train Martial Arts purely for self defence, and you have no intention of ever stepping into a mixed martial arts arena.
Of course, this is true of the majority of people that practice martial arts. However, self defence is as much psychological as it is physical.
Human beings can achieve great things when they believe they can, and this is where the psychology of fighting comes into play. If you truly believe in yourself then your skills are likely to prevail under pressure. Yet, you must test yourself physically and psychologically to know whether you are ready to defend yourself. This means that you have to push your physical limitations.
TRAIN YOUR MENTAL FITNESS
Fitness, even Mental Fitness is key to MMA because if you wish to compare skills first you must have a good level of fitness and conditioning to survive the duration of a comparative contest. It is not wise to take the view that a fight will be over in a second with a one punch knockout.
Even for those that train martial arts for self defence and good health, fitness and conditioning is important, especially if you train as a hobby.
On closing, ultimately it is not your martial art, but how you train the art that is the defining factor.
Training scientifically means having a methodology that can be controlled and replicated.
Yet ultimately the aspect of fitness and conditioning is key to a complete scientific approach to fighting.
In future videos I will be discussing the psychological importance of mental fitness training for combat, self defence and MMA. The goal is to make you mentally tough, because Psychology wins fights. In the meantime train hard, be safe.
