RIP Jane Birkin. The British-French singer/actress may be best known for the coveted Hermès fashion accessory that bears her name but Jane Birkin was also one of the most photographed women of the 60s & the voice of the most scandalous song of that era.

In 1969, the 23 year old Birkin met the French singer Serge Gainsbourg, and they began a long and tumultuous relationship. The two collaborated on several musical projects, including the infamous song "Je t'aime... moi non plus", which was banned in several countries, including the UK, due to its explicit content. Birkin had several more hits including "Jane B", "Lolita Go Home" and "Baby Alone in Babylone".

In 1984 Birkin was seated next to Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas on a flight from Paris to London. When Birkin placed her bag in the overhead compartment, the contents fell to the deck, leaving her scrambling to replace them. She explained to Dumas that it had been difficult to find a leather weekend bag she was happy with. Dumas took this encounter as inspiration to create a supple black leather bag, based on an earlier design, the Haut à Courroies, which Hermès had created around 1900. Since the late 1980s, the bag has become a status symbol, though it has become much easier to purchase due to aftermarket resales. (this info: Wikipedia)
