Karyn's next project is the Artesania Latina 1/10th scale wood stagecoach. While usually ship models, these Spanish wood kits are some of the best models on the market.

INTERESTING HISTORY:
Before the transcontinental railroad, traveling in the west meant riding in an expensive stagecoach, riding a horse or walking. So unless you were able to walk 1000 miles or willing to put up with saddle sores you took the stage. Usually a Wells Fargo stage. One coach, two drivers and six horses to move at most six passengers perhaps 50 miles per day. Wells Fargo carried the mail as well. Pony Express while a fun and amazing moment in western expansion was actually a failed experiment. 20 boys riding 100 horses at full speed were able to get one very small mailbag a few hundred miles. To understate the problem, this was expensive. And freight was moved on heavy freight wagons by American Express teamsters. (My great great grandfather rode home from St Louis to Salt Lake City riding on top of a load of lumber on one of these freight wagons. Which was one wagon in a ten wagon train. Three weeks 14 hours per day riding on top of a bouncing load of wood. BUT it beats walking AND the stagecoach was very expensive!) After the transcontinental railroad ended this horror, both of these companies used their wealth to become banks. Hum.....

From the web:
Evolving from designs as early as 1716, the 1848 Stage Coach became the most useful and recognizable of them all. As the only means of cross-country public transportation before the trans-continental railroad, the stage coach played a key role in delivering not only people, but also mail, news and money to the rapidly-expanding west.
This museum-quality, 1/10 scale Heritage Collection replica of an 1848 Stage Coach includes fine-quality high-precision laser-cut wood parts and strips; turned brass pieces, photo-etched details and hinges; simulated leather for driver and passenger compartments; working lights, doors and suspension; wood wheel parts; and detailed step-by-step building instructions with over 400 photos. Recommended for modelers with previous building experience. Length: 15.8 inches; width: 4.9 inches; height: 10.2 inches.

Okay, so when this first popped up on my computer I thought you had a model of an Artesian Latrine and wondered who the heck would want to build a spring fed outhouse. And then I put my glasses on. Getting old sucks.

I'm am so glad you have your winter planned out. May the surgeries go well with rapid healing. That is so funny that the Metal Earth coach is a repro of the Artesania. Build a masterpiece.

Yes, these hobbies and project do teach us patience. A little at a time and you'll have a gorgeous stage coach. Oh, and Happy Birthday Karen! Have fun building your model and stay warm you two.

"Winner-winner; Wagon's for dinner..." Most excellent project for Karyn and her ""Mad Digits" Here will be that special build that will challenge, be-fuddle and bewilder. I know Karyn can do this. Greg and Jeanne.

My mother bought and built wood stage coach and other wagon kits 50 years ago. (they even came with rough cut mules one had to carve to shape and real leather straps for the suspension). I have no idea who made the kits. But I grew up with those lovely completed kits on the shelf in my parent's home.

Have fun with that kit Karyn! Will be a beautiful stagecoach when completed. Beyond my patients level! I Might try the metal stagecoach though.

That is really cool, but terrifies the living you know what right outa me. Those old balsa wood model air plane kits are about the most I ever did with wood kits.

Whoa! That's a far cry from my first model kit, a military plane by Revell in the late 1950's that had about 3 plastic parts and a couple of nasty decals! Good luck with that beauty. Can't wait to see the finished masterpiece!

Those wooden hubs! Try the you-tube channel "Engles Coach Shop". Of course, the hubs he built for the new 20-mule-team-Borax wagons were a bit heftier - like about 350 pounds each for the rear wheels, i think he said. But they sure do look like the hubs on your stagecoach. Guess they got the model right. God Bless, this winter.

Enjoyed this and am looking forward to seeing the building process. Like your Matching Colorado tees. Notice the bottle of Coca-Cola on the shelf. Coke first made that design of bottle at the Root Glass Company in Terre Haute, In. Take care of your hips. It takes 3-4 weeks to recover from hip replacement surgery.

Remember when building a complicated model kit, one must look at it across eyed and bite ones tongue to the side one is dominate with in order to make it look great.

I get the MicroMark Catalogue and have considered getting this...but first I must finish "Santa Maria, " hull done needs masts and rigging, " HMS Bounty, " not yet started. "Swift" Pilot boat finished, might redo the rigging, did that one 30 years ago, gathering dust on bookshelf. My best and only one in a display case is "Oseberg" Viking Long Ship (Amati). "Santa Maria" & 1805 Virginia Pilot Boat are by Artesania Latina, "Bounty" 1/50 scale is by Constructo Modelisimo. Amati & Constructo same quality as Artesania I far as I can tell. Fine Italian craftsmanship.
You two are a lot of fun. Never heard of a girl modeler before but have heard of (and seen) girl models.

As a help in building the stage coach, go over to Engel's Coach Shop. He recreated the 20-mule team borax wagons and water tank wagon for someone and has videos of doing it. He also has videos of steam bending wood. He does gorgeous work.
