Millennials are not killing Harley-Davidson, but Generation X is.

I wanted to go over some interesting data relative to the age range of Harley-Davidson buyers and who is responsible for the downturn of Harley-Davidson. I think they can bounce back stronger than ever but it is going to require some inspired design that is aimed straight at the 30 year old buyer, not the average 50 year old they sell to today. Feel free to leave your comments down below. This should be interesting.

I'm a gen x rider. And I will not be buying a $30K HD anything. I'm not a tech guy, don't car about stereo or on board nav. I just ride. You make valid points again. Good vlog. Street glide standard for me maybe. I'm holding off see what indian comes out with end of the month. RG copy?

Great video. I am a Generation X person, born in 1973. I’ve owned Harley’s scene 1991, and have owned 4 of them. When the economy crashed in 07, my well paying union job took a major hit also. From 07-18 I still kept my Harley, but when things improved and was able to get a new bike I went with a Indian Chieftain Darkhorse. I went with the Indian because I believe it was a better bike for me for that amount of money.

Anecdotal story here. I am 56 and have owned 9 Harley's since 1982. I have never bought a new Harley. The market is flooded with high quality lightly used Harley's with lower prices as ever. I remember a time you could not buy a running big twin for under 10k. Love my 15 SGS I bought 2.5 years old for half of what it cost new!

I completely agree. GEN Xer here. Yes we will NOT buy harleys. Actually harley walked away from gen x. They built floating couches when gen x wanted light low and fast. If you get a sportster you bought a "womens" bike. So why the f would we ever buy harleys. They don't care about us.

58 year old here even though I own a 2018 heritage 114 feel like there is better bang for your buck out there but I love my ride . That being said they need to come out with a Cali Club style bike . We want tunes on our soft tails too.

New motorcycle buyers aren't interested in the old Harley "image" and the older (fast disappearing) riders only want a "hog."

I purchased my first 2005 Harley Davidson Road King when I turned 50 on Veteran's Day of 2004. My motorcycle will be 15 in November. I am now 65 and will not buy another New Harley because they are too expensive. I still ride and enjoy every minute of it. I see brand new 2019 CVO Harleys for $49K. Nice to look at but not affordable. Thank you for your video. Live to Ride, Ride to Live. Be safe 🇺🇸

Anyone not recognizing Gen X and trying to lump them into boomers or millennials is a complete moron! I say this as a member of Gen X and wait for it, I am about to turn 50! I am a Harley Davidson owner and supporter, hell I have even owned a couple of Buells! I’ve owned close to a dozen Harleys and currently ride a 2021 Electra Glide Standard and as long as I am able I’ll always own and ride a Harley! Attempting to “blame” the problems of a company on a particular generation of consumers is problematic to me, there’s plenty of blame to go around! From the motor company to the financial sector to the consumer and even the government! We need to stick together as riders, regardless of our chosen brand or style of bike and continue to support the industry, infighting never accomplishes anything!

Most companies have looked at the Gen X total numbers when compared to the millennials and stopped marketing to us.... we are a very small generation in terms of total numbers and the millennial generation is huge, like the boomers.

Why buy a Harley, when the are so many other motorcycle companies that have better deals, new technology, and decent pricing.

Harley's biggest problem is its past success, there's a glut of used bikes in excellent condition out there. The riding population isn't growing and more and more folks are buying used bikes. I can afford any bike and I bought two used Honda VTX-1300's, one for $2500 and one for $3500. Both bikes are fully loaded and ready for long distance touring. Oh, these old Honda's will be more reliable than new Harley's.

I went to buy my 3rd brand new Harley Davidson at the age 46, 2 weeks ago . Harley refused to come down 1800 dollars or even think about working with me on price so I walked. The fact that i was a repeat customer didn't mean a thing to them. So I will never buy another new Harley Davidson. Harley's way of screwing the people who buy the bikes is undeniable, 400 for oil change to keep factory warranties ( just one example) is pretty fucked .

Tastes have changed. No one nowadays wants an expensive, leaky, clunky, heavy, slow, unreliable, maintenance intensive, loud, and beautiful motorcycle.

Japanese bikes are becoming king. I like Harley’s in the since of my inner child looking at loud bikes but as an adult Harley’s do not seem practical and can be a bit annoying when I’m getting on my bike in the morning to go to work and I wake up the whole neighborhood. I sold the Harley and went to Honda.

My son and daughter (Gen x) have zero interest in Harley-Davidson...in their opinion HD is just a shiny loud overpriced bike.

$20, 000 -$30, 000 for one motorcycle is what is killing Harley.
