Amy Brady is the Deputy Publisher of Guernica magazine and the Editor-in-Chief of the Chicago Review of Books, where she also writes a monthly column called “Burning Worlds,” exploring how contemporary fiction addresses issues of climate change. Brady’s writing has also appeared in O, the Oprah magazine, Slate, The Los Angeles Times, The New Republic, The Village Voice, the Dallas Morning News, Pacific Standard, McSweeney’s, Literary Hub, and other places. She is the co-editor of the anthology, House on Fire: Dispatches from a Climate-Changed World, forthcoming 2021 from Catapult. Brady received her PhD in English from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and has won awards from the National Science Foundation, the Bread Loaf Environmental Writers Conference, the Center for Research Libraries, and various academic organizations. She is a recipient of a CLIR/Mellon Library of Congress Research Fellowship. Brady hails from Topeka, Kansas, and lives in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Omar El Akkad is an author and journalist. His journalism earned a National Newspaper Award for Investigative Journalism and the Goff Penny Award for young journalists. His fiction and non-fiction writing has appeared in The Guardian, Le Monde, Guernica, GQ and many other newspapers and magazines. His debut novel, American War, is an international bestseller and has been translated into thirteen languages. It won several prizes and was selected by the BBC as one of 100 novels that changed our world.
The 15th Hancock Symposium centered on the theme of “Vision & Values: Charting Our Paths to the Future.” Held on Wednesday, September 16, 2020, it showcased dynamic speakers, innovative formats, and engaging activities that explore realms of human endeavor that bring to bear and develop a capacity for a far-sighted vision that is rooted in a commitment to deeper values.
