My Father died at 7, I'm 34 now. My Mother has never remarried but my "step father" has been with her for over 20 years, they love each other and everyone in their lives don't doubt it. He will one day get his social security, so will she. She will also receive my father's benefits as well, which if she formally got remarried, she would not receive anything on my father's behalf. My Father would want her to receive it, and my stepfather is a good enough man to understand the "big picture". Marriage and the government is a strange combo, seems more personal than the government needs to be.
