Limiter and Compressors - both the VST and analog versions - have a number of similarities. They both manipulate audio dynamics, however they have different purposes. The difference between the two is incredibly important and luckily we had Alex Wankhammer - the co-founder of sonible aand a legit VST plugin engineer on our stream to tell us everything we need to know about these incredibly powerful plugins.

How I would describe it, as I use compressors and limiters:
Compressor:
a)shape the sound and/or b)decrease the dynamic range and
Limiter:
a) control the loudness and/or b) prevent clipping

Typically french black and white art movies are lacking compression. One moment they are whispering over a cigarette and the next someone is screaming.

so where would you put the Limiter in the Master chain or effects chain? would you place the Limiter at the very end of the chain??

Bit of a shame how this starts off. Compressors do not reduce the dynamic range of the signal, because their effect isn’t instantaneous. Compressors can be used to increase the dynamic range of a signal just as well, by letting through an initial transient uncompressed while compressing the tail.
