Thank you for this video. I'm writing an essay on the Ottoman Empire's collapse and I've been struggling on a starting point for gathering information. Videos like this really help me formulate ideas and a general structure before I jump into in depth books. You definitely deserve more views!

Its amazing how homosexuality was decriminalized in a Muslim majority empire, being ahead of the west, now its the complete opposite. Turkey never changed this by the way, homosexuality still legal since the 1850s.

At 12:42 we hear that Serbia and Montenegro were considered strategically important territories for Western Europe. Reading between the lines, the portion about the massacre of the 10K christians in lebanon in 1860 that "outraged" Western European leaders who "subsequently" demanded that the afflicted territory become independent from the Ottoman Empire can simultaneously be interpreted as "Western Europe considered a fragmented and Europe-dependent Ottoman Empire to be strategically desirable. Thus, when the violence against Christians broke out in Lebanon, they couldn't wait to justify breaking off yet another piece of the Ottoman Empire in the name of protecting Christians in the region."

Like how the Crusades are taught in textbooks as "Christians in Western Europe wanted to defend their idea of Christianity through righteous military campaigns in the Middle East" but even though that's part of the story, we can also interpret the Crusades as "Western European leaders knew that plundering the Middle East would bring them quick cashflows and stimulate their economies and weaken their geopolitical rivals there, and happily justified their military campaigns by invoking the need to protect the Christian faith."

Is it safe to say that the Ottoman Tanzimat Reforms were analogous to Japan's Meiji Transformation in the 1860s?
