The Moza Slypod is a motorized monopod that is programmable by an app, allowing you to do motion time-lapses and smooth dolly shots. But can it match up to traditional motorized sliders and dollys? We take a look at this new innovation and see if it is all that its hyped up to be, or just another failed gimmick.

Compared to a "Video Monopod" it slighter by far than say the Sirui Video Monopod that I've used for years. Since this review, the newer models perform in rock solid fashion. They are still noisy, but in Quiet Mode, its ok for interview work, which I will use it for a bunch.

I got my Slypod Pro and Aircross 3 yesterday. The Aircross 3 is cheap feeling, impossible to properly balance even with very light camera setups, and has stiff controls. The Slypod is impressively built…but the included ball head won’t hold any camera weighing over a few pounds. The app sucks as it is counterintuitive, the controls in the app are inverted, and setting waypoints was a royal pain…I couldn’t get the Slypod to move in real time while I set points…which means I have no idea what the framing will be until I start the movement.

I tried to link the Aircross and Slypod in the app. That was incredibly frustrating. The app kept disconnecting from one unit. I had to go back forth between screens to adjust both the gimbal and the Slypod. No live feedback on the Slypod during waypoint settings made it nearly impossible to see my framing without repeated experimentation. Moza has received lots of complaints about the app, and they still haven’t done anything to fix it. The last update was 5 months ago on iOS, and from what I can tell, stability issues continue to haunt it, and Moza simply doesn’t understand how to create a sensible, intuitive app UI.

Despite being “Pro”, the Slypod actually supports LESS weight than the older version.

Frankly, I should have known better. The YouTubers who were gushing about this thing all were using super light setups such as an A6000-series with a kit lens. No wonder they didn’t say anything about the weight limit.

I’d love to use the Slypod. I had visions of cool shots I wanted to take with my Zcam or S1H…but neither is light enough for this monopod, except in vertical mode.

$600 for the Pro is an outrageous price. I got mine from Amazon at $100 off sale. It’s STILL too expensive. I’m returning both Moza products. Really too bad as the Slypod could be quite useful. Obviously Moza isn’t fixing the issues. They’ve now had 3 iterations of this product, and it’s still buggy.

Useless thing, my first one (bought in June 2021) was very wobbling during vertical shots.
It’s replaced by a new one (after five weeks waiting) but this one was wobbling in horizontal shots.
Again this one was replaced but the third one was even worser than the second. Complete crap!
