The universe of Sonic the Hedgehog is full of its own secrets and mysteries. And so it happens that some interesting things might be hiding in the most unexpected places. And today we would like to share with you an amazing discovery our good friend and the community member illuminor has made.

illuminor specializes in translations - Japanese translations in particular. Having looked the Japanese version of Sonic OVA he noticed that the credits song «Look-a-like» has certain words that have never been used anywhere else and that differ from what fans usually document.

«Look-a-like» is the ending theme of Sonic OVA performed by Riyu Konaka. Its full version was never officially released, though most of the song can be heard in the original Japanese release of the movie. And its short edit was later released in the official «True Colors: The Best of Sonic the Hedgehog Part 2» album.

In all variations available on the Internet we can hear the line «A short while ago, I was born» which then repeats twice, but in the movie the first time sounds as «A long time ago…», though we cannot hear the rest due to the dialogue of the characters.

illuminor decided to get to the bottom of it and reached out to one of the people who was involved in creating of Sonic OVA. We will not disclose the identity of this person not to cause them any troubles. The original plan of illuminor was to ask for the song's lyrics, but his interlocutor exceeded all expectations and just sent the whole track instead of the plain text. And so, friends, for the first time in history we are happy to introduce you the full and original version of the song «Look-a-like». Have a nice listening!

We are thanked to illuminor for the news and for such a great material!

Привет, народ, это не основной ролик, участником нашего комьюнити был найден утерянный полный трек «Look-a-like из Sonic OVA». Он ориентирован на Запад.

I can't understand why everybody says that the song doesn't make sense. Maybe it's because I don't speak natively english, but I can understand it perfectly.
TL;DR: The song speaks about similarities between Sonic and Metal Sonic by giving comparations of various objects that, though can look like different (and sometimes superior) things, are really the same. It could be even a prelude to the dialogues of Metal Sonic in Sonic Heroes.

"Ice and water": two states of the materials
"Steak and cow": meat in two different forms
"Autumn, this year and last year": The same station in two different years, with almost identical characteristics.
"Spark and burn": A case of japanglish. "Burn" refers to the fire. A spark and fire can burn.
"Rain and cloud": again, two states of the materials.
"Tuesday, Wednesday, so is Friday": Three days in which usually a routine is followed.
"How 'bout moons and headlights": Both can illuminate a dark night.
"What I say and what I think": Usually our words reflect our thoughts.
"A, B, C, D, E, F…": At the end, simple letter which alone don't have an specifical meaning.

"A short while ago I was born, and I memorized by a lot of names": This is about Metal Sonic when he was created. It's a case of japanglish that tries to state that he was made with Sonic's strenghts but trying to overcome his weaknesses.

"Air and oxygen": We breath air, which is composed by many elements, but we can be given pure oxygen if needed in case of an illness.
"Money and wallet, sterling sparkling": Again a case of japanglish. The first reffers to paper currency, the second to credit/debit cards, the third to coins. All of them used to pay.
"History and history books": You can learn of history by living it or by reading it.
"Night and universe": It's more in a poetical way. It reffers to the starry sky.
"Human ocean, foot in pool": A bit poetical. Means that something that can appear as really big to someone, to others could look really small.
"Imagery and real life": You can record something to "live it" again.

"A long time ago one caveman had a busy life making tons of names": Though a history lesson, this reffers to Sonic, who had to develope all his abilities since he was born, when Metal Sonic was created with all of them.

"Everything is born from this planet: a number, a TV, even thoughts that entertain": With "this planet" it means something that was useful to develope the civilization as we know it. We needed numbers to start understanding our world; the TV was an invention that allowed to be in other places without actually being there, therefore allowing a better understanding of the world; and our thoughts led to ideas that made possible other inventions.
"Everything came out of this planet: a boyfriend, a pencil, even your new videos": With this we have the opposite: things that we could want but aren't really needed. Babies can be born even if there isn't love between two persons; you don't need to write everything if you understand things correctly; and, well, we (maybe) could make it without Netflix or YouTube.
Both of cases are alike in the way that both were created when people started to think, understand and manipulate their environment.

Well, I think it's everything.

English Lyrics:

On a Sunday, riding my bike
I notice, I notice, different things that look alike
On a Sunday, riding my bike
I notice, I notice, many many things that look alike

Ice and water, steak and cow
Autumn, this year, and last year
Spark and burn, rain and cloud
A, B, C, D...
Tuesday, Wednesday, so is Friday
How 'bout moons and headlights?
What I say and what I think
A-B-C-D-E-F...

A short while ago (a short while ago)
I was born (I was born)
And I memorized (and I memorized)
Quite a lot of names

On this planet, drinking my coffee
I notice, I notice, different things are alike
On this planet, drinking my coffee
I notice, I notice, many many things that are alike

Air and oxygen
Money in middle, starting speech
History and history books
A, B, C, D...
Night and universe
Human ocean, foot in pool
Imagery and in real life
A-B-C-D-E-F...

A long time ago (a long time ago)
One caveman (one caveman)
Had a busy life (had a busy life)
Making tons of names

On a Sunday, riding my bike
I notice, I notice, different things that look alike
On a Sunday, riding my bike
I notice, I notice, many many look alike
On this planet, drinking my coffee
I notice, I notice, different things that are alike
On this planet, drinking my coffee
I notice, I notice, many many things that are alike

Everything is born from this planet
A number, a TV, even thoughts that entertain
Everything came out of this planet
A boyfriend, a pencil, even your new videos
And everything is...

On this planet, riding my bike
I notice, I notice, different things that are alike
On this planet, riding my bike
I notice, I notice, many many look alike
On this planet, riding my bike
I notice, I notice, different things that are alike
On this planet, riding my bike
I notice, I notice, new and universal look-a-likes

At first I didn't understand what the lyrics are even about or why it's in a Sonic movie of all things, but now that we have the full song, it makes so much sense!!

It's Metal Sonic's theme song!! The song speaks of Evolution and how far we have advanced. Countless years of capturing the likeness of life and putting it into a machine has been perfected into one single entity, and that is Metal Sonic, like Eggman said!!

So awesome!!

"A long time ago, a caveman had a busy life making tons of names" has to be one of my favorite lyrics of all time.
