Human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) provide the potential for generating large numbers of wild type and disease ipsc lines to advance discoveries in developmental biology and disease research. Two main challenges in expanding ipscs are reproducibility and the cost of the culture system, particularly for larger-scale studies. Here Dr. Rupa Shevde discusses the evolution of pluripotent stem cell culture media, from KnockOut™ Serum Replacement on feeders to current feeder-free solutions and provides detailed information on Essential 8™ Medium, a defined feeder-free culture system that provides only the essential components necessary for optimal iPSC culture and expansion, improving reproducibility and differentiation potential while reducing cost.

Rupa calls the medium E8 throughout rather than Essential 8. Was she using Essential 8 from Life Technologies, or E8 that she made in her lab?
