Big Fan Captain John, thanks for posting. One thing worth mentioning is that "hove-to" vessels are considered to be "underway"; thus must maintain proper lookout according to US COLREGS is required. Therefore, it is important to stress that on busy waters one may not just heave-to and "go below to cook or rest".

question, I always thought heave to means head to the wind, so that the wind doesnt produce any pressure on sail ?
