Those nubs/knobs you were talking about are "Just Bushings" that clamp up onto the alternator casing!

Put a small socket over the bushing so that it rests/seats on the bracket, Use channel lock pliers to gently pull the bushing back out about 1/8". Easy to slip the alternator back in and the bolts will reset the bushings snug against the alternator!!!

Want to make it even easier?? put a tiny bit of penetrating oil around each bushing before removing the alternator. the oil will help the bushings shift a bit and thus easier to remove and replace the alternator!

Just did my 1997 Safari. Puzzled over the "nubs" mentioned here. Finally used a small
C- clamp/ socket, to press them back into bracket, thereby providing clearance for new alternator. They are then pulled tight against alternator when bolts are tightened. Hope this helps somebody, good luck w/ project. Still better than a payment every month.

Just did mine yesterday, on the side of the road in the middle of a road trip no less...

Mine did not have the rear bolt. Also, don’t file anything! The nut-certs on the mounting bracket expand and contract. I saw this in another video before I did it... use a c-clamp or vice grips to compress the bushings before placing your new alternator. If you do this it will slide in and be a perfect snug fit.

My alternator was missing the back bolt, a few thousand miles after I purchased it the alternator mount snapped at both bolt points and dropped the serpentine belt off. Being on the road at the time the loss of power steering and brakes was nearly catastrophic. I replaced the mount and within a week the new mount had cracked at one bolt. The problem may lie in the tensioner which I have replaced but I think that third bolt in the back may have helped since it is through a steel plate and not the cast aluminum mount the other bolts are in.

If you've ever experienced the Mandela effect and know what it is. I have personally experienced a Mandela effect with my own Astro van. Actually more than once. The biggest one that still bugs me is how the spark plugs are taken out. Every time that I which I have done it probably about five times on this van. When I first heard of how to do the spark plugs I got met with a bunch of groans and all gosh it's a pain in the ass kind of thing. And I found out yes it's a giant pain in the ass but it's not as bad technically now. The last time I did my spark plugs they were in different locations it bugs the hell out of me. I was told originally in the process to do the spark plugs on the thing. He said Jack it up you have to take both front tires off you have to take off the dog house. You get 2 spark plugs from the front of the motor from underneath the hood. 1 spark plug per tire side and then get the last 2 from inside the doghouse. four times that I have done it I have always done it this way I've had no problem doing them after the first time which was a headache. But the last time I did my spark plugs there was not any area from the doghouse to be able to access any spark plug and from the hooded area you cannot access any of them you have to take off the front tires to get all six. Just still messes with me big time.
