Mat came in with the most polite way of saying I told you so.

If you are thinking of a colour for your time machine, please consider the off white colouring of some plastics. That way, as it gets older it yellows, and that would be very useful if you bump into yourself coming back from a different time. It prevents you from using the wrong machine and setting up infinite loop paradoxes. Just a thought.

My Grundig “Walkman” that I sent you finally came into use.
Nice to see it again and that it gets the fame it deserves.

Hi Techmoan! Just popped back in time to let you know your time machine worked perfectly. It's a massive hit in the future—we even named a city after you! By the way, your choice of color for it? Absolutely legendary. Timeless, you might say.

I think we've proved that Mat knows his Arsebook from his Elbow.

The Toshiba machine looks like it's just waiting to be filled with dust and fluff!

I have fixed one of these. As Matt says, it is definitely not for the faint of heart.

One of these came across my desk about 6 months ago. I immediately fell in love with how it looked (the yellow/beige one with the graphics on it looks so much better and more fun). To replace the belt, there is some unfun desoldering that has to be done, as well as some careful disassembly.

I am no means an expert in repairing Walkmans (though I have gotten better over the past year) so this took me several sessions to do, mostly because I didn't want to screw anything up and end up completely destroying it.

Once I got it back together, it worked like a charm! After some tine tuning (adjusting the speed/azimuth), it sounded just as good as it did day one.

For the curios - the "Elbow" is missing a capstan, which you need for constant-speed playback. Spinning the spools is only to take up the slack, but the actual transport of the tape is done through the capstan.

I have followed you for years, allways thought you were a nice bloke. But you showed your horns today in the most polite manner i've ever seen... i love it!

The nice thing about time machines is that you can postpone working on them as much as you want.

"Arsebook" - classic 😁
Oh, and all you need for your Time Machine is a marketing gronk, some flashy "artist impressions", a 3D print mock-up, some dodgy maths backed up by an "expert in a lab-coat" and crowdfund the hell out of it. Nothing will be made but in a few years you'll be the billionaire CEO of "Time Inc - the Future of the Past" with a huge staff of day-traders and a PR team.

That was the politest and most in depth "I told you so" I've seen in a long time.

Matt, we absolutely need that you contact Mend It Mark and let him repair this Toshiba player! It's a win win opportunity! Mark could do a great video showing his extraordinary skills, and get paid for the job, you'll get a working collectable item worth 1000 GBP, and we get a great collaboration from two of the nicest YouTube out there! Please up vote!

Fun fact: the personal stereo compact cassete players were called "Freestyles" in Sweden. Walkman was Sonys Freestyle.

Cassettes have the most satisfying handling sounds. The manipulation of the cassettes, the engagement of the tape reading mechanisms, opening and closing doors, button pushes, it’s all very mechanical and distinctive sounds.

I interpreted the thumbnail more literally than I should’ve and kept waiting for Matt to bust out the micro Walkman 😅 I shouldn’t watch Techmoan this early in the morning…

6:33 Nevermind the size comparisons, Hitachi had a portable cassette player called the "Walkgirl"!?
