I'm not sure how you ended up on my feed since I am a Blender user, but this information is super helpful! It happens to be that Blender has drivers which work like connectors, so this is possible all within Grease Pencil (Blender's 2D animation tool). I am really happy I found you since you have so much to teach about cutout animation and it really does translate to Blender.

I followed this to make my characters' pants.. thank you! Excellent technique. One thing I do not like about connector is that it leaves the keyframes up on the timeline layer. If I am making a template for a client these keys might confuse the animator or worse they will screw things up by manipulating them. Therefore I prefer to use a linear function for simple moves, opacity or scale, (not for path changes). I used this expression to move the stitch line on the pants as the character rotates from front to 3/4 view. (btw, I have only basic understanding of expressions, chatGPT helped me out.. amazing)
value = thisComp.layer("Body Turn

if (value >=0){
xPosition = linear(value, 0, 20, 130, 160);
} else {
xPosition = linear(value, 0, -100, 30, 130);
}
[xPosition, 0]

Just watched your Duik vs. Joysticks video, trying to figure out how to get started on character animation. I didn't realize clicking on this video that it's you again! Really enjoying your videos—can't wait to watch more!

Awesome tutorial, I've never even touched that part of DUIK.

Man, this "adding extra details to the character" can get complex fast. Now you need to add that green (drapery) is following leg and drapery IS not the leg. That would mean you move green (rotate it backwards when you move leg forwards ("drapery is always late" -Animation Survival kit). Next will be changing the shape of it when character moves leg forward or backward to show the structure/curves or the leg.

Next, when you have complex motions like kicking or jumping those shapes/masks/paths will be different.

It is a good way to start thinking about a more complex rig that would be used in hi-quality animation. I am sure that the demands will only rise up over time for animators. This + better quality animation will probably be two separate paths in the future.
