I volunteered in Nepal after the 2015 earthquakes, and I'm not going to lie, it was the most labor intensive work I have ever done. This was during my 49th birthday which made me one of the oldest volunteers on site. (there were about 5 of us older ones!)

Our day started at around 6 am where we all got up, lugged wheelbarrows, shovels, pick axes, etc. over the bridge and to our site. It kind of reminded me of the 7 dwarfs as they headed to the diamond mines.

In whatever I do, I give it my all, especially here, but I'll tell you, it did a number on my body. I woke up with numb hands that felt like they were swollen like balloons. They weren't though. There was so much pain in my hands and arms that I thought I had exercise induced compartment syndrome which led me into a bit of a panic since I was in the middle of nowhere in Nepal, and how would I communicate what was going on.

It wasn't compartment syndrome though. My arms only felt like balloons. They weren't tight and hard, they felt normal to the touch.
What it ended up being was a pinched nerve in my neck from all the bending and strenuous activity.
I was happy that a Nepali holiday fell during my time volunteering to give me a much needed bread.
I packed my backpack and headed up the big mountain, passing small villages along the way for a short solo trek to see the Himalayan mountains. Along this trek, I met some of the most incredible people. They were so giving and kind. Tourist aren't usually in these parts of Nepal, and if it weren't for the earthquake, we wouldn't have been in Melamchi either.
Next time in Nepal, I definitely want to go back to this incredible region and try to see some of these amazing kind people again.
I volunteered in Nepal! When I initially went to Nepal in 2012 to trek the Annapurna Circuit, I absolutely fell in love with the country, so when the 2015 earthquakes hit, I immediately signed up to go do volunteer work.
I volunteered with an American based organization called All Hands and was sent to the Melamchi district in Nepal. Here's the site I worked on during my volunteer time in Nepal.
