This is the Sony ECM-M1 mic. I used it for a few weeks, and it is a great mic. It has eight recording modes and a digital interface that makes it perfect for all types of content creators: videographers, audio engineers, filmmakers, vloggers, and live streamers. This microphone has advanced features that allow you to quickly shoot in crowded public spaces or areas with background noises. It has multiple recording modes for various scenarios, such as interviews, vlogging, talking headshots, and ambient sound capture, just to name a few.

Sorry, I have to say that the Rode Videomic Pro sounded a lot better than the ECM-M1. The audio from the ECM-M1 with the noise cancelling reminded me of the Lark M1 with noise cancelling in that the audio sounds more tinny and processed. With noise cancelling turned off, the Lark M1 sounds great. I owned the Sony ECM-G1 on-camera shotgun mic for about five minutes because the sound was unacceptable. And the ECM-M1 has the same quality in my opinion. Overall, the audio sounds tinny and processed.

For what Sony wants for this thing, I would do a LOT of comparison research first. Yes, no wires is an advantage but if that is the only advantage, then maybe keep looking. Thanks for the review.

This mic sounds terrible based on your tests. I preferred the in-camera mics every single time due to the horrible metallic shimmer of digital noise cancellation that was applied. Was NC on in all of your tests? If it was on, it would have been great if you shown us how it sounds with NC off.

nice one coach! it sounds great and it does a good job cancelling background noise. probably sounds even better (when cancelling out background noise) when using a voice isolation on your editor.

Thank you for the review. I was curios if you had a chance to use it with the camera in a vertical mode and if so, how it effected the patterns?

Nice down to earth review. What do you think is the maximum practical distance between mic and subject?

I do a lot of filming in my lawn, its beside a busy road. Do you think this would be suitable to use if we point it away from the road noise?

Hi, I loved your review, and I am planning to buy this microphone! Though I have a sony A7c which supports digital hot shoe option but I saw there is a usb c option and a digital-to-analog switch. Does it connect to a cable as well if one wants to use it with usb c.

Can this mic handle loud music without distortion or clipping? I would be using it a lot to record rock concerts with a lot of amplification.

I find it sounds kind of "mecanical". Is it because the noise cancellation was activated?

It will be priced the same as ECM-B1M. That puzzles me. What is your comment on this?

Is it only me? But the M1 doesn't have so good audio. Too "robotic". Similar in other reviews.

I love the tech in this microphone, but it just doesn't sound very good.

The Sony mic sounds really bad sadly, especially for the price. Might be more practical but sounds worse than the inbuilt mic in certain situations. I can clearly hear some kind of phase cancellation, maybe due to the usage of 4 mic capsules. All in all it sounded the most unnatural out of the bunch.

I really want to love this mic. But in so many of the video reviews, including this one, it just sounds terrible. Especially with noise cancellation turned on. The presenters voice sounds like it was produced by a bee rattling around in again can. I have the B1M and the B10 and they both sound vastly better. I’d really love to have the 8 pickup patterns that this mic allows. Talk about versatility. Maybe Sony can release a firmware update to fix the sound quality. But right now it sounds awful, so I’ll have to give it a skip. Versatility in producing terrible sound is worthless to me.
