ILLUMINATION AWARD FOR OUTDOOR LIGHTING DESIGN
Award of Distinction

GTX MATRIX, Zagreb, Croatia

Designers: Dean Skira, Goran Herak - Skira Architectural Lighting

Complex-looking designs don’t always require complex solutions. The exterior lighting of two GTC Matrix
office buildings offers the perception of linear and horizontal movement thanks to a small single-point fitting
that visually projects complicated-looking lines of light. The project offers low-energy exterior lighting while
also adding a dramatic visual to the location’s urban nightscape. Bespoke fixtures—designed with a new base
containing a built-in DMX-RDM electronic driver with an in-out connector for plug-and-play connection—allow
for special scenes to be programmed for festivals and national holidays. The façade lighting on each building
is connected via a fiber-optic cable that creates controlled scenes on both buildings simultaneously. IP-rated
fittings with 360-deg blade optics illuminate the building’s brise soleil, which in turn acted as secondary
reflectors. To keep the clean aesthetic, all of the wiring was hidden and no installation boxes or electrical panels
were permitted on the façades or roofs.

The IES Illumination Awards were presented as the opening session to kick-off the 2020 Virtual Annual Conference. With Acuity Brands as the platinum sponsor, many projects from around the world were recognized with this honorable distinction. Thank you to those that submitted and congratulations to all recipients.
