Left USAA last year. They are not the same company they used to be. Saved a bunch of money. Semper Fi!

I am one of those people who assumes USAA always provides the best rates. I need to conduct due diligence on this! Thanks for sharing.

I am SERIOUSLY considering changing insurance. I currently have USAA, insuring a 2017 Chevy Van and a 2009 Jeep Patriot. I am paying close to $800 dollars per 6 month with an EXCELLENT driving record. I have been with USAA for over 20 years. I got an online quote from Progressive, which was less than HALF of what USAA is charging me! USAA, you got some 'plaining to do! I will be having a SERIOUS talk with USAA this upcoming week. And maybe with Progressive Insurance as well!

Excellent common sense video. Good to see this in a relatively young dude- running the numbers is always prudent. As a matter of interest I always got great rates using Costco's car insurance provider.

I was guess insurance is just high where I live. Single driver 2015 Colorado, 2007 wrx Sti. Allstate was charging $355 a month!! Been with them 11 years. Just switched to Geico.. now down to $195 a month.

I did the very same thing. When I mentioned to the Geico rep the quote I received from Progressive, she simply said they could not match it. It was 45% less than Geico.

Just remember to compare apples to apples, I was with Mercury for years, almost 30 decided to leave after they refused to pay for a deductible for a road hazard (comprehensive) that wasn't my fault. I got hit by a piece of tracker truck tire and damaged my hood of my Wrangler. I have never had an accident but I did have two glass claims over the years. The deductible was only $25.00 for glass and they replaced the wind shield on my FJ about $1, 600 if I was paying out of pocket. I decided to leave after they refused to pay my $500.00 deductible. I am now with Ameriprise but they do not offer glass damage. Another thing that is very important is AGE, I am 51 years old and this plays a very big part, we pay about $2500.00 per year for 4 vehicles, '07 FJ, '14 Ram 1500, '17 RX 350 and '16 Wrangler Unlimited. Shop it out and check all avenues, Costco, AIS... Great video and information!

As a 997.2 and a Cayenne owner myself, I would recommend not using Progressive. I won't make a positive recommendation for a company but I would will make a negative recommendation against Progressive. A Progressive policy owner side-swiped my Cayenne and when I shopped around for high quality repair shops (and those recommended by the local Porsche dealer) none of them would take the job if Progressive was the insurance company. My Cayenne is a 2014 so there are not a lot of used parts available yet and Progressive will not pay for new factory parts unless it absolutely has to. I ended up having to file the claim with my current insurance company (thus on myself) just to get one of the quality shops to take the job. Now my current insurance is fighting Progressive for reimbursement. If Progressive doesn't fully reimburse, then I think I'll end up taking the ding on my insurance even though the other driver admitted to 100% fault. I think if you have a vehicle like my older Honda Ridgeline, then Progressive might be fine as I wouldn't expect a showroom repair on an older/average car. The red flag for me was that one of the quality shops said they won't even let the Progressive agent on their property the relationship has gotten so bad. Maybe you could call a few shops that the local Porsche dealer recommends and just ask what they think of Progressive. It could be regional for all I know.

On a happier note, having both a 997.2 and a Cayenne, I have greatly appreciated your videos. You get right to the point and show lots of footage. Keep up the good work.

If you have been with the same insurance company for more than 5 years and you have a great record, give them a chance before you move on. Let them know that you are getting much better quotes from other people. The day I decided to call my insurance company to tell them I was cancelling them, they slashed my rates in half to keep me. That was a lot better than the competition was offering...

They other companies maybe cheaper then USAA but you can’t beat them at customer service and road side assistance. So, you get what you pay for.

USAA has never been able to convince me to switch to them. How can they claim that you're getting thousands of dollars of discounts for being a veteran when it's essentially a prerequisite? It's not like my neighbor that isn't in the military or a veteran can get into this company.

I switch to Liberty Mutual because USAA was charging way to much, when I called USAA to cancel my insurance with them they wouldn't even try to keep my as a customer. A short time later someone called and ask did anyone in the company try to help me with my insurance rate being lowered. I said no, he gave the usual salesman reason why and offer to lower my insurance by $83. I told him it's to late, plus I was saving $143 a month with Liberty then said that I owe the company around $144, they would bill me.
I thought to myself, I'm not paying them anything. Fast forward today I get a letter from FLHSMV Florida Highway Safety Motor Vehicle, in the letter it stated that I am not insured! Guess who sent FLHSMV a letter saying I'm not insured? USAA, you tell me what kind of company does that? This company DOES NOT GIVE A SHIT ABOUT VETERANS!

Wow!! This is eye opening!! I switched to USAA about 17 years ago (according to the app it says I’ve been a customer for that long). And they gave me a better quote than whoever I had at the time (I think it was the “pre Flo / name your price tool” Progressive). And I haven’t looked back since. I think the biggest factor is understanding the coverages you need and making sure I’m properly covered. I love USAA but I may have to shop around at that price. One thing to consider though is customer service. That is an intangible that’s hard to price. Imagine having an incident with your beautiful 997 and then getting some push back from the “best deal”. I’ve never had any push back or any negotiating to do with USAA. It was simply, “you have coverage, you had an incident, go wherever you like and have your car fixed.” And they financials were taken care of. It’s hassle free.

Matt Fisher :
On June 19, 2010, my sister was driving in Baltimore when her car was struck by another car and she was killed. The other driver had run a red light and hit my sister as she crossed the intersection on the green light.
Now, I don’t discount the possibility that Katie was at fault in the accident, but it never really looked that way. The only witness who gave a statement on the day said that Katie had the light, etc. The totality of the evidence left some room for argument, but that will be the case any time there’s a catastrophic car accident that doesn’t happen underneath an array of video cameras.
One indication that the case was pretty open-and-shut was that the other guy’s insurance company looked at the situation and settled with my sister’s estate basically immediately. Now, because the other driver was underinsured, that payment didn’t amount to much, but my sister carried a policy with Progressive against the possibility of an accident with an underinsured driver. So Progressive was now on the hook for the difference between the other guy’s insurance and the value of Katie’s policy.
At which point we learned the first surprising thing about Progressive: Carrying Progressive insurance and getting into an accident does not entitle you to the value of your insurance policy. It just pisses off Progressive’s lawyers. Here I address you, Prospective Progressive Insurance Customer: someday when you have your accident, I promise that there will be enough wiggle room for Progressive’s bottomless stack of in-house attorneys to make a court case out of it and to hammer at that court case until you or your surviving loved ones run out of money.
Which is what Progressive decided to do to my family. In hopes that a jury would hang or decide that the accident was her fault, they refused to pay the policy to my sister’s estate.
Out of a sense of honor, and out of a sense of the cost of my sister’s outstanding student loans, my folks opted to try to go after the money through legal channels. At which point they learned another delightful thing. In Maryland, you may not sue an insurance company when they refuse to fork over your money. Instead, what they had to do was sue the guy who killed my sister, establish his negligence in court, and then leverage that decision to force Progressive to pay the policy.
Now my parents don’t harbor much venom for the guy who killed my sister. It was an accident, and kicking that guy around won’t bring Katie back. But kicking that guy around was the only way to get Progressive to pay. So they filed a civil suit against the other driver in hopes that, rather than going to court, Progressive would settle. Progressive did not. Progressive made a series of offers (never higher than 1/3 the amount they owe) and then let it go to a trial.
At the trial, the guy who killed my sister was defended by Progressive’s legal team.
If you are insured by Progressive, and they owe you money, they will defend your killer in court in order to not pay you your policy.
