The Karakoram Highway - 8th Wonder of the World
The other name of the Karakoram highway is N-35. This als o called as Pak China Friendsip Highway. The Mighty Karakoram Highway is 1300km long starting from Hassan Abdal and enters into China via Khunjerab Pass where it becomes China National Highway 314. This Highway links Pakistani provinces Punjab KPK ang Gilgit Baltistan to the Westren Chinese province Xinjiang. This is one of the highest paved road of the world. The height of the Karakoram Highway is 15 500 feet above sea level. Due to its height and miraclous construction it is also called as "8th wonder of the world".
The construction of the highway started in 1959 with the collaboration of Pakistan and China. After 20 years in 1979 the highway was officially opened for the people. 810 Pakistani and 200 Chinese workers lost their lives during the construction. Mostly died because of landsliding and falling from the cliffs. On Pakistani side the road was constructed by FWO (Frontier Works Organization) under the supervision of Pak Army Corps of Engineers. Brigadier (R) M. Mumtaz Khalid have written a book on the construction of the higway and about the difficulties faced by workers namely "The History of Karakoram Highway" in 2 volumes.
The Karakoram highway is one of the famous highway for the tourists from pakistan and from all over ther world. The highway passes through many beautiful places and cities including Hawelian Haripur Thakot Mansehra Abbotabad Batgram Basham Patan Sazin Dasu Chilas Dinyur Aliabad Gulmit Gilgit Hunza and Sust. It extends to Tashkorgan Upal and Kashghar city of China. Karakoram Highway is composed of beautiful Peaks Valleys Lakes and Rivers. River Sindh and Attaabad Lake flows side by side.
