We take turns planning a date night once a week, to remind us to never take for granted the time we have together. Sierra’s date nights always entail a surprise of some sort, whether it is coming home to a surprise dinner or going to a live show in town. Well, needless to say, this date night on September 30, 2017 was going to be a little different than the rest.
First off, Friday afternoon she tells me to pack four outfits and be ready to walk out the door by 2 pm, of course, I’m running late and she’s running around frantically to get me to hurry yet keeping her cool. She reassures me to just get in the car and we will be back by 7 pm that night to cuddle our pugs. We got to an exit when she told me to keep my eyes closed.
We parked, and I was able to open my eyes, only to be staring at the Detroit Airport Parking garage, like WHAT!? At this point, she was still telling me that we’d be back to our pugs later that night. On the plane, she closed my eyes and my ears so I would not know where this plane was going.
Did I mention there is no one I trust more in this whole world than her considering I have horrible flight anxiety? After overhearing the flight attendant, I found out we were going to Baltimore, or so I thought. About 2 hours later, the plane lands for a connecting flight and she convinces me to get off to “stretch my legs”.
As we’re walking she said okay let’s go get the rental car “WE ARE STAYING IN ATLANTA FOR THE WEEKEND!” What dream am I in right now? Atlanta for a date NIGHT? She reveals we are staying for the weekend because she found “cheap tickets”. I am such a fool, I still don’t think anything of this extravagant weekend getaway.
We wake up the next morning, bright and early and head to Sweet Water State Park, a beautiful state park with a rushing creek surrounded by hills and pine trees. The exact location we ended up was Mill’s Ruins, an old manufacturing building where a scene in the movie Hunger Games was shot.
Sierra had me stepping on large rocks to cross the river, looking to get a good picture of the ruins. She loves going to movie sets, so finding a perfect shot for her was nothing new to me. After 10 mins of both of us jumping from rock to rock, we both stopped to take in the beauty surrounding us. I’ll never forget the pine needle smell in the air, or the Smokey fog rising from the creek to the treetops.
Between the pine trees and the rushing water by our feet, it created the freshest smell that no words or pictures could explain. As I’m taking all of this in, she tapped my arm and I turned around to see her on one knee with a beautiful shiny ring, that was so sparkly it was blinding my eyes. That shaking feeling, I got the first time I saw her get off the plane, happened all over again tenfold.
I thought I was going to pass out, so bad that my coffee fell out of my hand and into the creek. I thought I was in a dream, the best dream. She had a beautiful speech that made me cry. I couldn’t stand to see her that vulnerable, so I made her get up before she even put the ring on my finger! After we wiped away happy tears and I stopped shaking as much, she revealed to me the other reason we were in Atlanta; she got us unbelievable, front row seats to my all-time favorite artist: Jack Johnson!
To top this all off I found out there was a photographer hiding in the woods, capturing our magical moment as each step unfolded. If that is not made for TV, then I am not sure what is. Love happens when you’re least suspecting it and can hit you with the force of an ocean. I marry my soulmate, and love of my life on May 26, 2018 and I have never felt more blessed. Love wins.
