I can vouch for the effectiveness of the banana punt. My son, an Aussie, plays FBS. He uses the banana kick regularly and it proves very successful. For 3 games in a row a banana kick created a muffed catch of which 2 were recovered by his team. The variety of punts creates doubt in the returner's mind.

The ball curves (like a banana 😉) It’s used in the AFL to bend it through the goal posts from a tight angle, and when it bounces it generally goes in the opposite direction of the curve.

Maybe what the NFL needs to do is start looking at Aussie Rules players to catch the ball, as well. Or NRL fullbacks, who catch high swirling kicks on a regular basis, and make it look easy.
