Sewing a Victorian 1890s walking jacket (part 1) (Foundations Revealed 2023 competition)

Welcome to my channel, and my very first video!

I recently joined Foundations Revealed, and decided to enter their 2023 competition. Whilst off down a Pinterest rabbit hole, looking for inspiration, I found an image of a jacket that I could not live without. This one :

This video is the first in a series which will see me making this jacket together with a skirt, overskirt, hat and gloves to give me an outfit worthy of any well heeled Victorian socialite!

But this won't be my only project on this channel - I wear 1920s, 30s and 40s clothing in my day to day life, so there will be plenty of projects like that along with how-to's for skills that I picked up when I worked for a London tailor.

I have also started a blog, which will run alongside this channel. I go into a little detail on each stage of my Foundations Revealed project, but will also feature the other projects I will be working on too, together with things like the how-to's, vintage fashion book reviews, pattern reviews, knitting, vintage events and the like...

The patterns, fabric and other items I am using in this video are listed on my blog, which can be found at :

I do hope you enjoyed my first video - even though I accidentally managed to delete some of my footage (I hope you will forgive me that rookie mistake! lol!)

If you do like what you have been watching, please feel free to subscribe, click the bell thingie and if you *really* liked it, click the thumbs up :)

Hope to see you back for my next one!

Very much enjoyed your first video. Was lovely to see the back take shape, and especially how you handled the lapels and the darts. Like others who have commented, we so appreciate the chance to learn.

From a presentation standpoint, appreciated your calm...it's warm and without that frenetic feel that can be hard to listen to at length.

I really enjoyed the video! Despite the lost footage I think you did a great job. I can't sew (I'm more of a knitter/crocheter when it comes to textile crafts) but I find watching sewing content to be relaxing, almost like ASMR. I loved the colour of wool you picked for the jacket, the final garment is going to look amazing. Glad I stumbled across your channel :)

Welcome to Cos Tube! That jacket is simply stunning. That's a proper mountain to set yourself to climb. Well done.

Very exited about your project! Will continue to follow your work for sure 😊 (NB : music is a bit loud in the back… hard to follow and be focus in your voice… I‘m a bit sensitive to sounds but maybe not the only one ❤️)

Good start! You jacket looks so interesting. (BTW, the music doesn't seem necessary whilst you are speaking--don't know if others feel the same.)

Well done, and congratulations on your first video, you did great, and love to see how the jacket is coming on. What was the wooden tool you used to press down the seam towards the end? Also, just a small suggestion; you need to look slightly more to your right when you're looking at the camera, otherwise it looks like you're talking off to one side, not looking at us (which is far more engaging). Keep up the good work.

Loved this video *so* much.
Absolutely amazing jacket inspiration ... and I now know that wet-dog smell = good wool. hehehe
I started working on the mockup for a jacket a couple of years ago, and your videos are going to undoubtedly provide the necessary kick up the ar-herm to get it beyond the mockup stage.
If it's any consolation, my microSD card for videos has disappeared since copying the relevant files for my latest video. I have potentially lost videos for two projects.
Onwards and upwards.
I've subscribed so that I can learn from your future content. Thanks!!

Congratulations on your first video! I love it! You seem very genuine and honest and I think that is really what society needs right now. Mistakes happen and that’s no biggie, it was still valuable content!

Great 1st video! Looking for to seeing how this project progresses!

Lost footage happens to everyone. It stinks, but is sometimes unavoidable.
