Fun fact, these new ones aren't replacements, they're actually competitors.
The old brick-like ones were microfigs, these new ones are called nanofigs.
Way to Lego for not being confusing.

I never got to play Heroica, but I loved Minotaur. Such a simple game that is still so fun to play. It’s easy to quickly set up and explain the rules. I still use it for when relatives come over and we wanna play a group game, since its very intuitive.

The newer "nanofigures" element was originally used as a trophy in the CMF series I believe, like an Oscar award. Also, technically the style of the "classic microfig" still lives on with the one Minecraft set that featured a Baby Zombie, which more closely resembles the board game microfig.

Here's a weird fact that I know, for some reason, the old versions of the mini legos are based off of the old school original models of legos.
