Can cleaning chemicals damage your climbing gear?

Sometimes your gear needs cleaning, but there's debate about what's chemicals might be safe to use and what might damage it. Here I test a few common household cleaners against some nylon and see if it gets weakened.

I’m completely self-funded and receive no freebies or kickbacks from tool companies. I’m just a guy who wants to know how these tools perform, and figure you do too. You can chip in here, it'll be hugely appreciated:

Cheers!

Very interesting! Thanks for exploring this.
I seccond the idea that moneral acid is likely more dangerous like HCL or battery acid.

I remember trying to track down rec climbing accident reports involving soft good failures from chemical exposure a few years ago, from vague memory they were all strong mineral acids (ie. HCL, H2SO4), there was one report of formic acid (maybe one attributed to ants?) but I don't think it was very convincing.
