Five tips for Slappy Crooked Grinds

1. Approach at moderate speed: not too fast, not too slow. Too slow and it will go to noseslide easier, too fast and you could slip out.
2. Bend your knees: lowering your center of gravity helps and can help generate the “spring” you’ll need to get the heel side wheel over the top.
3. Angle: When starting off, approach at a more “extreme” angle, a bit under 90 degrees but damn near close. You can decrease the angle as you get used to it, ending up at about 45 degrees on the approach. This is just what works for me, trial and error, and you’ll find what works for you.
4. Foot Placement: front foot angled across the nose, with heel in the pocket, back foot straight across, just behind the back truck bolts (T Stance, holmes!). Become light on your feet and push your front foot slightly ahead of you, while leaning slightly away from the curb with your upper body. This will aid in getting your front heel side wheel above the lip. Once contact has been made, begin to stand up on top of the curb and push into your front foot, namely the arch of your foot. This downward pressure along with the front leg position will get that forward momentum going and get you grinding. Don’t push so hard that your heel drags though or you’ll come to a stop.
5. Coming out: it’s easiest to come out fakie at first because most likely your shoulders will be opened up. From there, you can practice decreasing the angle you come out at, going from a 90 degree turn, to 45, 30, 20 and so on until you can come out straight. Drop your back foot and do a little pivot and you’ll straighten out. Compress your legs on the landing to absorb impact, keep speed and look cool.
These are just what works for me, Slappying is a technique and there are bound to be variations of what works person to person. Find what works for you, work on variations and don’t forget to have fun! If this helped, tag me in clips of your makes! Let me know if you think I should do more of these!
