It can be hard to strike the right tone or know what’s going to appeal to someone, but there are tricks. We can craft a narrative and use well-placed emotional appeals to tell customers a story.

Even if you don’t consider yourself a persuasive person, you don’t need a +5 charisma modifier to succeed at this crucial stage of entrepreneurship.

This video highlights many of the reasons I detest commercial advertising. Most of it is psychological manipulation to get people to buy something they don't really need, or that has less value for the money than competing products. The Crash Course Media Literacy series does a fantastic job of explaining how to avoid being manipulated by these efforts.

You teach us "how to sell" while selling yourself to us. That's real entrepreneurship!!

I feel like 1/2 of Anna Akana's videos are about how to resist having your greed, fear, envy, pride and shame be manipulated by other people.

I have to say, even presented like this in the least evil way possible, all of sales and marketing still feels overtly slimy.
None of this was about having the better product or presenting anything factual; it was entirely about emotional appeals.
I get that appealing to emotion is effective, and that your competitors are definitely going to do it even if you don't, but I have a hard time with it ethically.

Hmmmph, I feel like I know what I want so strongly most of the times that even the slightest push from a sales pitch person makes me retreat and not listen to what they have to say.
