With former CEO. Although LEAN is indisputably a useful tool for manufacturing industries, it may have a drawback. That is the loss of ability to make revolutionary change. It relies instead of make evolutionary changes, and provides no clear path to huge innovative leaps.

A lot of companies train people on lean and yet never really change into the lean culture, they just expect lean to magically phase in.

The "Lean" we think of really isn't the whole picture.. its more or less been boiled down into some functional tools and principles that can be applied. They are extremely valuable without a doubt, but even Toyota (where these concepts were forged) doesn't rely solely on the "Lean" we are all taught in school, textbooks, training seminars, and by consultants. The Toyota Way does a really good job of outlining this. Toyota has other business practices and principles that drive more revolutionary change, though they still generally take a more slow and steady approach even with more radical innovations.

I'm really impressed by you sir. It's hard to leave your video without leaving a comment of appreciation.
Great and valuable 👍 content and best part is that it's free.

I spent 21 years in manufacturing that phased in Lean Manufacturing... in practice. I feel it really depends on the people inside the building to make it work.

The thing is, we were FAR from Lean. Expectations from customers we couldn't meet, but we promised them, anyway. That lead to planners that couldn't plan correctly. It wasn't helped by having floor workers that would make up their own schedules. We had 53' trailers (plural) and no less than two warehouses full of finished goods waiting to ship... until someone found a reject. Then, it was an expensive mess.

great video!
Just heard about Lean from my wife's business school and it sounded well to good to be true, now the picture is more clear :)

Not understanding what lean actually is or how to employ it is the actual problem in most cases. As demonstrated perfectly by this video.

no problem, at the end of the day, having a very nice meeting room where everybody sticks on acrilics nice graph reports (that simply is to print what everyone has in their computer controls) plus nice boards where supervisors write the production and delivery %, makes directors and managers think they have everything in control and say that company follows the best lean practices

You’re right, I am a green belt and can say prom my point of few, Lean Six sigma is focused on analyzing and making processes better by great g flow, but it is not revolutionarie

How did the US build 300, 000 aircraft during WWII without lean. My company had two Japanese lean expert sensei come all the way to my company in Michigan and everyone thought they were gods gift. I’m skeptical. We are so short handed on the manf floor and I’ve had 12 different supervisors in 21 years. There are no formal training programs for new hires whatsoever. Everyone barely knows what they’re doing, morale is in the toilet. The lean expert asked me if it would help to move a certain shelf about 3 meters away. I laughed and he hasn’t talked to me since. Can’t wait to retire in 3 years

Spot on - evolutionary not revolutionary.
Working in EtO on dev projects and it is not possible to implement lean. As you are not able to know in advance the forecast, or have a 2-5 years contract from the customer, you need to be agile and extremely flexible.

LEAN has caused person after person to quit at my job. Our retention rate is less than 14%
