Living On $70K A Year In NYC | Millennial Money

Leah Warwick, 25, lives in Queens, NY and earns $70,000 a year as a social worker on Rikers Island. According to Leah, saving for her future is as important as spending money now. She's also interested in socially responsible investing, as well as learning more about investing and financial literacy.

This is the latest installment of Millennial Money, which profiles people across the U.S. and details how they earn and spend their money.

Leah Warwick tries to support companies and brands with missions and practices that account for the betterment of society, not simply profile. Warwick compares her interest in impact investing to choosing high quality ingredients when she bakes: “I love to cook, so I want to buy the best butter,” she says. “The best butter is going to produce a better cake. And so if I can give my money to a place that does better investing ... it creates a better world, a better environment, a better future.”

After graduating from NYU's school of social work in 2017, Leah worked at a family shelter in New York City before accepting her current job as a social worker on Rikers Island. Warwick is an advocate for incarcerated men living with infectious diseases like HIV and hepatitis C.

She has worked on Rikers for 1½ years and finds the job fulfilling. She wants to continue working there, hopefully one day in management.

When she was unemployed, Warwick earned extra income by taking surveys and being part of focus groups, which she still periodically participates in to supplement her income. She finds them by scouring Craigslist and calling local agencies, and she says there’s a certain skill involved to being selected to participate.

$115K in debt.... And she only makes $70K a year. Was the Masters even worth it?! $5K in Paypal that doesn’t even gain interest. Is Paypal even insured?! She could put that in a HYSA. Wow.

Love how she laughs about $115, 000 in debt and then says "And if for some reason the loan forgiveness doesn't work out I'll just pay $10 a month". "When it comes to budgeting I just mainly use my brain". HA! This lady is in a different universe.

Those surveys are BS.
Takes like an hour asking all these questions, then you finally get one that takes like an hour to do, then they give you $1 only.

Besides the student debt loan, this person actually is pretty damn responsible with her money. Her biggest "expense" was her savings at a bit over $1, 000. Not many adults twice her age can say that.

Loved this one! It feels like everyone gets family money so it was so refreshing to see someone making it on their own!

I searched for this kind of videos to seek motivation. Instead I became freaked out. Can they feature someone who is smart in managing money that we can emulate and take example and inspiration from?

How is she only paying $60 a month towards her student loan if she owes that much? That public service plan scares me because it isn’t a guarantee and 10 years is a long time to wait for something like that. I guess debt can feel crippling so it’s easy to have an “I don’t care” mentality but that interest! I hope she starts following someone like Dave Ramsey. She saves a ton of money each month, she could definitely tackle that debt.

Good to see the channel giving the time of day to all types of Millennials. Some are rich and only value money, some want to retire early, and some don't care about money b/c they value other things in life.one way is not superior to the other. What is important is that the person is content/happy with their life.
