Transcript:

The ring is a birth control method that is sometimes also referred to as a "vaginal ring." Some people will also know it by the brand name NuvaRing. It's a small, flexibile ring that you insert into your vagina for three weeks at a time. On the fourth week, you remove the ring, and that's the week you should get your period.

The ring works by slowly releasing hormone. And this hormone will prevent your ovary from releasing an egg, and the hormones in the ring will also make your cervical mucus thicker, which will prevent sperm from reaching an egg.

For every 100 women who use the ring, fewer than 1 will get pregnant each year, provided they use it correctly. Using the ring will not interfere with having sex, and your ability to get pregnant comes back quickly after you stop using it. It's a really wonderful method because you don't necessarily have to think of it all the time. You only have to address it every three weeks.

Most women will adjust to the ring with few or no problems. Potential side effects, though, can be very similar to those found with the use of birth control pills—and those could include breast tenderness, some spotting between periods, or possibly some nausea or vomiting. These symptoms will usually clear up within the first 3 months of use.
