I learned decades ago working in retail that the sales person/greeter in an American store is less about politeness and more about preventing "shrinkage" aka theft. The psychology behind it suggests that people would be less likely to steal if they believe they are being watched. The greeting: ..." Hello welcome to...." is more about them saying 'hey, I see you, we are watching you.'.

Great channel! I follow Joel & Lia and Joel’s personal channel, but learned a bit more about him from your brief conversation.
I also have a background in linguistics and trained as a French teacher. You do an excellent job of enunciating clearly and speaking deliberately, which I’m sure is very helpful to non-native language learners.
A few cultural points from the perspective of a middle-aged American woman:
1. American attitudes toward LGBTQ+ people have evolved tremendously over the past decade or two. Growing up in the 1970’s-80’s, gay stereotypes were essentially all negative, and only San Francisco and possibly NYC or LA seemed like culturally safe places to be “out”. Now, stigma still exists, particularly in less urban areas, but gay marriage is now legal throughout the US, and polls show steadily strengthening support.
2. I find it fascinating to learn about how granular Brits’ perceptions are of a person’s class based on vocabulary and especially pronunciation. I speculate that on some level, Americans are flashier with fancy cars and other outward signs of material success because we don’t have such an innate signaling mechanism.
3. I’m not at all surprised at Joel’s success in approaching Americans, and agree with his perception that we are friendlier. I wonder how it would be received if I made chitchat with a stranger at a bus stop or in a shop — say, with a comment on the weather. Would people be quite put off, find it amusing (“Those kooky Americans!”, ) or welcome the interaction? (Obviously individual differences exist; just wondering about the most likely outcome.) How likely would this be to differ based on geographic location (North vs. South, urban vs. rural, etc.) or age/gender/etc. of the stranger?
Again, nice job with this video!

Thanks for the interesting talk about UK/US cultures. I remember I was quite amazed by how friendly people were in the UK (Northern England) when I visited for the first time. Perhaps that was because I'm from Japan where people tend to be more reserved. I would have a greater culture shock if I ever visit the States in which people are more friendly just like Joel said.

This was an interesting conversation, as an American it was interesting to hear Joel’s general perceptions and differences between our two countries.

I resonate with Joe (20:13) when he said that about the host person at the pharmacy front door, because when I first came across that situation, it was so weird for me. I did feel that sensation of being supposed to buy at least the cheapest thing from the pharmacy.
I really wish I could just enter the place without the need to talk or respond to anyone.

Oh Joel please just know that that person is there to make you feel welcome at the store! I never think that they're thinking I have to buy anything as an American I just know that's polite behavior, no pressure.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. In America we have “greeters” who make eye contact and say hello not only to be friendly and approachable but as an anti-shoplifting effort. Studies have shown if you engage in communication with someone, even as simple as a hello, hi how are you today, are you looking for anything particular that I can help you with, the person is less likely to steal. Also, in most stores and shops there are cameras pointed at the entrance. So when greeters speak speak to you and make eye contact they are drawing your face up and towards the camera. It most definitely isn’t to pressure you into buying something, but that is an added bonus. 😉

i'm yankee and make no mistake about it the u.s.a. has a class system too it's simply a DIFFERENT KIND OF CLASS SYSTEM. every society has it even tribal groups all too often have varying forms of it. i love my country but one thang about it i despise is the crass in yer face materialism and the resulting consumerism that goes along with it. to a large degree the mentality is "it doesn't matter how you got there all that matters is that yer there" ie. if yer well off you deserve to be if yer poor you deserve to be.

that said one thang i think we mostly as a nation get right is that we as a people are mostly very polite and helpful towards strangers. and that i think does not come down to money or profit but more that the u.s.a. was the very first completely multicultural country on earth and people needed to be that way or the country wouldn't function. very simplified explanation but that is at least alot of it.

When is this video from? If it’s recent (2021) Joel said mistakenly that gay marriage is not legal in certain states. That’s incorrect. The Obergefell v. Hodges case, where the Supreme Court of the US ruled in favor of same-sex marriage, was decided on June 26, 2015, thus granting same-sex couples the right to marry in all the states of the Union.

Interesting! The notion that "Christian Americans" would unsubscribe once becoming aware of your sexual orientation. I apologize on behalf of those groups.

How does this guy not know anything about the United States yet his job is to talk about the US? Same sex marriage is legal in every state in the US.

Gay marriage is legal in all states. Obama when in office passes that bill. 😁😉
