Ruminant Digestive System Explained | Rumen for the win!

Hello! Today we're talking about how the stomach (really the entire ruminant digestive system) of how the ruminant animal works. We have a drawing of a sheep to demonstrate how the anatomy works but it also applies to cows, goats, buffalo, deer, elk, camels and giraffes! (Yes folks, I'd love to have giraffes running around on our little 1.25 acre plot.)

Why is it helpful to know how ruminant anatomy works? It really comes down to the fact that you ought to be letting them eat forage and grass to allow them do what they do best: drop amazing probiotics on the soil in the form of manure. Ruminant animals can heal the earth (and specifically, your plot of land!)! They've been doing it for millennia and can still do it if you allow them to graze on grass. Ruminants did not evolve eating grain, the ruminant digestive system just doesn't have the best stomach to digest grain. What they do have is the ruminant digestive powerhouse of a stomach that turns grass into something that will heal your land and help regenerate the earth!

I hope this information helps you in your quest to do better by your land, your animals, your health and the earth.

A bit about us:

My wife and I grew up in sunny southern California, 15 minutes away from the beach. As amazing as that was, we both dreamed of a life closer to land and animals. After getting married and moving to Utah, our family slowly grew. We had become a family of 4 living in a townhome with a small backyard filled with potted plants and a swing. In October of 2019 we decided it was time to make the dream a reality and move to a homesteading property. We came here with a 6 month old and a 3 year old and a fish. We now have a 18 month old and 5 year old, 4 pregnant sheep, 30 chickens, 20 (or so) rabbits and a garden that has the potential to sustain us and our animals, and a fish. There's lots of learning to do! And we've been happy to do it as we pursue a more enjoyable and sustainable life here on "the farm."

Ruminants are our prey food. Our natural diet in the food chain. The proteins. Amino acids and saturated fats are vital to us. Quite amazing creatures.

Great video! You even made the draw yourself to explain more clearly. That's nice! I agree that the music should have been at a lower volume.

Humans also chew side to side with tougher foods. Our tongues are more dextrous so they help with the side to side motion but seriously chew something hard and you’ll see.

So 3/3rds of a " quid ", is actually chewing and producing the product into a profitable bi - product, of several tri - products. The pro quo part of the exchange is the GDP and GNP of the Grain Belt. But what does Medicago Lucerne mean to Lagrange north of Richmond ? - A Crabby Patty mobile ? - In an Oscar Meyer Weinermobile Chamber of Commerce ? - Excellent segment cathartic to unlabeled chewable currency 👌

How much time does the food stay in each chamber?

People love lawns, but they never mention that if you don't mow your lawn can't grow. Ruminants are mowers, composters and fertilizer spreaders.

I don't think the average person realizes just how amazing it is. Ruminants can eat a very wide variety of diet and still have relatively pure muscle meat and fat. This is good news for carnivores 😊

The main source of protein for cows are not dead bacteria. That bacteria synthesis protein for the ruminants. About 35-40% of protein from their food is actually “for them”, the rest is for the bacterial micro biome.

Ok, so basically the ruminant animals recycle the earth, which recycle the barrier system of the height of the earth, which the trees, and grasses come from, so that is barrier, so cause heat and rain, so not too much heat, and too much cold since the heat part is holding the cold, well, I dunno, so what holds the heat to resistant the cold, like a brick hold the cold so house keep warm in winer, so in cold, well, perhaps it is not the holding system to resistant the cold since the cold come and destroy the green, but the cow doesn't get destroy? Can resist the cold? So, the point it holds the process of height of earth which the green as a barrier which connect to balance of rain not too much or too little, well, the too little is dessert so no grass so hot and dry, so no growth, so can't eat animals which animals can't eat the grass, so too little is not good, so what lead to too much? So, the cow is a helper of carbon dioxide which cause the green, so we eat the carnivore and the carnivore protect us by themselves being there to use themselves that s eating grass to cause the green growth, so green begat green. If cows and all ruminant is gone so we will not live so carbon dioxide will disappear so dessert will form so heat will be high, so cow is a carrier of temperature of height of earth. How does green affect the cloud or so?? So, ruminant is most essential for thriving live since if feed cow that is not green so soil is less good, so same represent of less good, so eating vegan is less good to us so we don't thrive so we suffer.

I’m thinking about starting a permaculture (regenerative ag) farm but I was out in Kansas and Colorado looking around at land and I passed a bunch of cattle feed yards. They look and smell like hell on earth. I’m scared if I buy land and then end up a mile downwind of a toxic corn-fed cattle feed yard, that could destroy the value of my property/land.

Do you have thoughts on the impact of feeding cattle corn? I’ve been looking into it and it seems detrimental to the ruminant digestive system. Thank you for this video to explain. I’d love to know your thoughts. There is very little info on the harms of corn-fed beef
