Portrait Painting Process Broken Down

I am a little more than half way done with painting this collage of Nicolas Cage. I call it The Rage of Cage. I thought it would be fun to film how I go about painting one of these Cages. Enjoy!

Books

Materials I suggest for beginners:
Titanium White, Cadmium Red Hue, Cadmium Lemon, French Ultramarine, Yellow Ochre, Cerulean blue

Lighting

Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

Chris, I really appreciate what you’re doing. You are giving invaluable lessons about painting with one of the most clear and learnable way I’ve seen in a painting Jedi. Your methods are really simple and helpfuI and I’m quite sure you’re making a lot of people’s life easier and more enjoyable with these lessons. I sincerely thank you for your effort and time that you put in to making these videos for the people you don’t actually know or have a connection with.

Good patience. I could never do this . The planning alone is impressive. I realize how you drew each head to get these expressions. When this is done you will have grown so much . The future creations are there for you. The creativity you have is endless. Impressive

As a huge Nicholas Cage fan, you couldn't have picked a better subject for expressions. Bravo

I agree with your stand on "flesh tones, and there being so much more color. I think that's with anything. It's about breaking away from what our minds assume and opening our eyes to what's actually going on in nature and our reference materials.
Great information! Thank you for sharing!

I like how you explain everything and show it and don’t go too fast so I’m definitely subscribing 🥰, also love your viewpoint on painting

You were definitely talking to me when addressing blending. Ha ha I have such a strong need to do that and it's a big downfall for me since I'm new at oils because I end up with a mess. I am going to try your method/tip of just adding a different value next to the previous one to get a good transition. Thanks!

I used to work at moca....before you were born...lol. I used to take pics at our openings, and I got a pic of Nic and his Dad. it's a great shot of them...When I meet you in person one day....I'll give it to you. (I know, in my dreams!) <---not the pic but getting to meet you.
