I like how their patterns reference their chess equivalents:
- the pawns rush you with numbers
- the knight sometimes goes straight, sometimes slashes up
- the bishop only moves diagonally across the screen
- the rook fight goes in a straight line
- the queen involves both straight side to side and diagonal attacks. The cannons can also move in multiple directions

I just now realized that you have to stay very close to the horse (knight), so he can play his attacks. No wonder my fight took so long, even when he obviously was signaling for you to approach.

I absolutely adore how each boss is animated with huge props to the Bishop's Dance and just everything about the Rook.

Plus the single boss music is just fantastic

It took me a minute to realize that the bosses are based on chess pieces and that their game over quotes refer to how they are used during chess

It's funny how the Knight is the only one who isn't linked to decapitation at any point. To defeat the Pawns, you need to parry their heads off. The Rook is pretty obvious in this aspect. While the Bishop and the Queen both have disembodied heads.

Number of parry that are needed to beat each piece.
Pawns: 8 (cuz there's 8 of them)
Knight: 20 (That's a lot)
Bishop: 8
Rook: Number of parry doesn't matter. All that matters is that you land 8 hits on it.
Queen: Same thing as the Rook

I love how at some point the king gives you money for beating the crap out of his wife

I like how the pawns always attack one by one and diagonally unless they are next to the wall and the music is fine as hell. Also, the rook looks cool.

It's so cute how the Rook/Executioner was fawning over a Guillotine

I was kinda worried what they would do about the coins since there wouldn't be run and guns but these were really clever and fun especially the tower

6:12 The sudden happy tune is a little disturbing if I might say. The King is standing there like “Congratulations, you killed my wife!”

I love all this fights, no matter how many times i died, i went back for more. Every mini boss has someting that engage me: the Pawn's gigle before jump, the Knight's intro and attacks, the Bishop's dance and the mecanics, the Rock's intro and movements, and the Queens intro and laught. And the music it's pure gold

Wild horse in a room full of expensive furniture is never a good idea.

I like how you fight each chess piece in order on how valuable they are in terms of points.

Pawn: 1
Knight: 3
Bishop: 3
Rook: 5
Queen: 9

A simple detail but cool nonetheless.

Honestly, parrying didn't feel that good most of the time, it was used well in run n gun stages but in boss fights it was just "hit pink thing", im happy these bosses actually use the parry mechanic more

The knight is definitely the hardest after defeating him the last 3 champions were a breeze

The King said exactly "In these bouts, your weapons and charms shan't be of use." Kind of weird that Ms. Chalice can be used for this given that you can play her from a "charm" itself (Astral Cookie to be exact). I'm gonna guess the Astral Cookie is the only exception.

Noticed some cool references in this fight:

Their death quotes represent their way of moving in the base game:
The Pawns say this: "One by one by one by one, your chance at victory is done!", referencing them only moving at one square.
The Knight says this: "A W for me and an L for you!", referencing their L-shaped move and the famous W and L terms in meme culture.
The Bishop says this: "I've got you beat in every angle!", referencing them only moving diagonally.
The Rook says this: "Beating you was pretty straightforward!", referencing them only moving in a straight line or side to side.
The Queen says this: "Too little, to late, I dare say that's checkmate!", referencing the famous term when winning in chess.

You cannot fight the king, referencing that the King is the weakest piece in chess.

The Knight, though easily the most frustrating, was probably my favorite of the group. Making you "fight" him at melee range to activate his attacks is a really clever way of making it feel like an actual duel.
