I’m a huge fan of Raymond Chandler’s writing, but while criticising the books of others, he completely ignored the gaping holes in his own plots. Folks are still arguing over the death of the chauffeur in “The Big Sleep”. Even Chandler, when appealed to during the making of the film version said that he hadn’t a clue. 😂

Caroline, thank you for introducing us to the first chapter of your new book which tells about your own experience of investigating the possibility that a cancer you have had twice might be returning once again. It seems a harsh judgment to call that hypochondria when you are concerned that you might be experiencing yet another return of a very serious disease. Being afraid of that seems like a natural reaction to the possibility that you might find again what you have every right to be afraid of. I hope that you never will have to endure another recurrence and that eventually you can be more at peace in the future.

Very interesting! Now I must re-read The Red House. Your excerpt about hypochondria sounds very like living with chronic conditions: I think, "Can I make it all the way through the grocery store?" before I leave the house. "Is that location within the 20-minute window I need to get home if I have an episode?"
