Lacey’s former Days Inn hotel has a new name and is almost ready for its new purpose.

The Maple Court enhanced shelter, operated by the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI), is expected to start taking in residents from an encampment on I-5 in Olympia next week.

The property has room for up to 150 people experiencing homelessness.

The City of Lacey is working with the non-profit, using state funds to pay for the renovation and operation of the facility for the next two years.

These people cant even take care of their tents.. how are they going to take care of a room??! The villages with tiny homes are a mess... piles of trash, drug paraphanilia everywhere. This is going to end badly, and the residents already living around that area are going go suffer as well.

Thank you King 5 for giving us a partial walk thru! As a former licensed security officer, I agree that the non-profit/county/state tax dollars "rule" of not having a "no illegal, recreational drugs & alcohol on the whole of the premesis" is a somewhat intentional failure of responsibility. Their rule leniency is allowing for the non-profit to fail and then ask for more tax dollars. Obviously, the non-profit got the funds with the current rule and will claim no responsibility for misusing taxpayer dollars and the failure to save lives. Compassion goes hand in hand with tough love. Denying drugs and alcohol to users and dealers is compassion. If they are denied, they have to make a choice. A hotel room is a luxury, not basic care. They need basic care "with rules" first - if they can't pass a drug test and subsequent random drug tests while residing in the taxpayer paid for non-profit managed luxury hotel. BTW: How many dogs and cats and litter boxes are allowed in the luxury hotel?

I’ll take the over/under of 6 months before it’s shut down.

Some of those people in encampments do not value property, theirs or others. I hope they treat these homes better than they do the streets. Just because you may be homeless doesn't give you the right to trash the streets!

It would be terrible for a person to say they either take a job holding a sign for a company or get thrown in a gas chamber. Only an asshole would call them a waste of air and a burden on society.

Good idea but the rooms will be trashed. When you get something for free there is No appreciation. Too many bad apples compared to the ones who will treat it respectfully.

I wonder how many bicycles one might fit in their room? All jokes aside, I wouldn't allow smoking in your room. Only in designated smoking areas. And then, only legal substances. Any open illegal drug dealing or use on the premises gets you booted. It might help to have a methadone clinic on the premises just to nip that in the bud. I'll hold my breath before I criticize trying this out. I knew a bum, he lived in an apartment for low income and homeless vets. He also lived in a tent in the jungle so he could do his drugs and screw hookers.
