As stated above, "Lara's Theme" was composed by Maurice Jarre for Dr. Zhivago. His work on that film won an Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1965. It was his second, his 1st was for Lawrence of Arabia in 1962. This French composer would go on to earn a 3rd in '84. He won several other awards and accolades for his compositions. Regarding Lara's Theme, he said (I'm paraphrasing) I knew I had a hit when I heard people whistling the tune as they were leaving the theatre after the movie's premiere. It's such a lovely tune that I bought the movie's soundtrack on CD. Melissa's performance evokes all the wonderful (and some melancholy) memories from that film. Her own beauty is a delightful complement to her skillful performance.
